I've had a foam Uni filter in place for many years. I don't put the miles on that some due but it's still in new condition....minus the dirt.79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.

I ran a UNI foam filter many years ago. Long story short, the carbs weren't adjusted correctly and the bike would backfire occasionally. One day I opened the air box and the foam filter had caught fire in there and melted. I had been running with the damaged filter for some time. That motor a few years later went to the scrap heap. Of course, YMMV.2H7 (79) owned since '89

They do not work with 78 airboxes because the clips that hold the wing nuts dig into the foam. I had to use a steak knife to get the airbox apart. That is tough foam! Total disaster at the same time with two of my 78 xs11’s.Skids (Sid Hansen)

+1 on what skids posted! If your airbox has the stock bobbypin style clips, it will NOT go well. I also had a uni in one bike, and tore the filter trying to get it apart. That's why I went to K&N, it fit without getting hung up in the clips.Ray Matteis

Well, this is a SG so from the consensus it will work. Contamination of the filter in the air box is what causes these filters to degrade and melt into the air box I assume ?
K&N is said to be a life time filter, even at 2 1/2Xs the price it's worth it, long run.
Please point out anything I may have missed as I'm trying to stay within a reasonable budget and the are more things to do like tires, these have good tread but are very old.
Did I mention I just put Shinko 777 on the 650 and it was the most difficult/stiff/strong tire to fight on ever. They say reinforced, NO KIDDING !!!76 XS650 C ROADSTER

Yes, the bobbypin clips are a problem. Fortunately I was warned about them prior so I made some clips that didn't damage the foam.79 F full cruiser, stainless brake lines, spade fuses, Accel coils, modded air box w/larger velocity stacks, 750 FD.

OK, a solution to the shredding of the UNI, now I lean towards the 1/2- the price of K&N.
I've had to remove that filter shaped plate under the filter to get a K&N into the air box so it would seal/close the two halves would not quite meet with it in there, anyone else have to do this ?
I wondered after if I still had a sealed top/bottom air box.76 XS650 C ROADSTER

That metal plate is part of an old OEM filter that stuck in there. K+N not gonna fit with that left behind, good move removing it.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Thank You gentlemen !
I can buy a UNI foam filter and replace it one and a half times for the price of K&N.
I've used the UNI pods with success, so why not the element for the air box.
I would not trust the integrity of any filter that was subject to fuel absorption over any period of time unless like the pods they could dry out and even then not too many times.76 XS650 C ROADSTER
