did my pics show?
Got the pics noice !
When I was checking this bike out I ran my hand around and under the mufflers carefully knowing there would be rust and maybe even injury, MY HAND CAME UP CLEAN< FELT NO SCABS RUST AT ALL ?
Looks nice, but the speedo is wrong for an '80. Should be an 85mph speedo, so the PO must have changed it, or it was built late '79 and they slid it in under the federal mandate for 1980.

I did notice the speedo, maybe they did get it through but if not I swear it's so clean I would tend to think the mileage is wrong to the good side. Judging by condition I'd put it more like under 10K even the fuse box looks new. Some oxidation on the cylinders but should clean up to near, if not perfect.
Anyone have a recommended method to clean the in between the fins ?

Even if the fuse box looks new, replace it! That is a problem waiting to bite you.
For the fins, 3M scotch pad and elbow grease. Once done, hit it with some high temp paint to keep it from oxidizing any more.

Why Thank You Ray, don't know why scotchbrite did not come to my little mind. I was going to use a 44mag brass bore cleaner brush, got a bunch of those and though I used to shoot every chance I got I just don't enjoy 300 grain slugs as much, find them a bit scary. To think I used to shoot 454 Casull
Once again glad I tossed it out there for opinions, can't help but love the way we share tips and insight around here !
Thought I sent this ? OLDTIMERS !
Any thoughts on this one, tried starting and it actually fired up, ran for a bit with the choke.
When it died after taking the choke off, OH JEEZ gas is pouring out of 2/3 like there's no needle seat in there. Pulled the rack, I think I know what's up ?
The needle seat O-rings must be gone, I don't see how a stuck float/needle could flow this much. I've a plastic boxed set of O-rings from somewhere ?
QUESTION, can these assorted O-rings even be used in the carbs ?
Oh Yeah, I pulled the plugs out of the idle/slow speed mixture tunnels and 1/4 were really stuck (Kroil loosed them up). Then pulled the diaphragms, they don't look like they have ever been run in a bike and definitely (in my minds eye) not the 23K shown on the substituted 79 speedo.
Next to pull the bowls and see what's going on with the flood of fuel coming out ?
Oh and I figured the octi was not sealing or stuck, to get the flood stopped turned the petcocks to off. Pulled the octi, ran some filtered hose and plugged the front petcock outlet, I believe if I member right that's what I'm supposed to do when discarding the octi.
All and all, HAPPY DAY !
The boxed O rings may leak quickly! You need O rings that are designed for fuel, gas and alcohol. IIRC the nitril will work, but they still need to be the correct size. Do all 4 while the carbs are off.
Yes, the octy bypass is done as you stated, so one of us remembers things at least.... Have fun with it! seems like it will not take much to be a good runner.

Thanks, Ray,
I am still working this out, thinking and then some, along with what I've seen in the past, maybe it is the floats sticking and not the needles or seats/O-rings that's causing the flooding. I found 1/4 slides were stuck pretty much, this makes me think that the bike sat a long time dry, or the fuel that was in it just evaporated leaving everything locked up ? I'll know shortly when I pull the bowls, everything else seems good, slides now free, idle mixture screws set to 2.5 turns out, deal with the bowls/floats/needles/seats, fresh oil and away it goes. Done
STEVE STOPPED OVER TO SEE, BROUGHT A WORKING SET OF CARBS WITH HIM, RAN GREAT HE AGREES IT'S NEAR A NEW BIKE. I NOW HAVE THE ORIGINAL CARBS WORKING. I ADJUSTED THE FLOAT STOP TANGS AND REPLACED THE FLOAT NEEDLES WITH A LIKE NEW SET, POLISHED THE NEEDLE SEAT INSIDE, ALL GOOD WITH THE CARBS SO FAR, RUNS SO NICE AND NO ENGINE NOISE OTHER THAN THE STOCK MUFFLERS, NOICE !
THE BAD, CLEANED THE CONNECTORS BEHIND THE FUSE BLOCK, NO HELP, CLEANED THE KILL SWITCH, AND GOT TACH, WALA I THOUGHT. NOPE, CHECKED OUTPUT OF THE ALTERNATOR AND IT JUMPS FROM 12.7V, not ENOUGH, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN 16.3V, TOO MUCH, LIGHTS GOT SO BRIGHT I THOUGHT THEY WILL EXPLODE, WEIRD,
The stock Volt regulator is frame grounded. Remove the volt regulator and scrape some paint at the contact surface with the frame. Clean up the volt regulator at its contact surface also. This is the way it uses ground. Alternatively (get it? ) you can run a ground wire to a better ground connection like where the battery negetive mounts to the frame.

Thanks ! Could that grounding cause this crazy fluctuation in volts ?
