I've just replaced them. If they are hard, and they have shrunk, it's not worth the trouble they can cause to try and "fix" them IMHO.

                    OK, here is the answer:
                    Buy new gaskets.
Sorry, but as the old material ages it get VERY brittle. There is nothing you can do to reverse the process. Trying to "save" them will take you more time and frustration, with the result being parts of the old gasket floating in the bowl.
This is my take on it, but I believe it is very close to the truth. I have gasket material from THIS century that is hard and brittle. Why would something 20 years older be any better?

Yes it was post number 7 but we were getting off track because he wanted to rejuvenate the gasket rather than get new.

OK, picked up a little tip from the man, William Denton over at the Micapeak Yamaha XS650 list. With the gaskets suspended in a sealed gallon can ( I used an old carb cleaner can and strainer) pint of fuel in the bottom, gaskets in the strainer suspended out of the fuel, sealed the can and now left to fumigate. I'll check in a couple weeks, in the meantime I found this place on eBay, hildebrandtgasketcompany and ordered a set of 4 float bowl gaskets $11.99. This company says they make these gaskets out of high quality gasket materiel.
I'll post again in both cases the outcome ?
