  • Burned the Clutch Up

Horsing around, having fun, and I'm pretty sure I burned my clutch up. At-first, threw it in gear, and it went no where. Didn't even stall. Engine just revved. Took the side cover off and adjusted the throw-out bearing, and it gave me enough engagement to get going. Could not take it over 4K, as the clutch slipped, and just revved. It got to a point at red lights where I had to keep the recs high and dump the clutch.

I'll pull the side cover off and I presume I'll find clutch fibers all down to nothing. I never replaced them when I changed my springs out. Probably a good time to do so, and change the oil too.

Yee...ah, it sounds like a worn clutch. They don't really look bad when they stop working so it may not be as bad as you think.

If you bought new OEM springs, try the Barnett springs before you dig into the clutch.

Don't forget to scuff up the metal plates! IF you "burned" the fibers, the metals will be glazed! And +1 for Barnett springs! I've tried others, and they just don't work as well IMHO.

        Yes, what Ray said!

If the clutched did overheat then it will be the inner plates and steels next to the hub that discolor and start to warp first and the outer ones will look fine.

Yeah, I replaced my springs with Barnetts about two years ago. So, going back into this will be easier. I remember buying evapo rust, thinking my steels would look bad. Nope, they looked good.

Yikes! You do need new friction plates.

I want pics. I've never seen a clutch destroyed in one of these.

Lol, well, I will certainly take pics tonight, as I plan-on digging in tonight.

I don't think I've ever seen a clutch that burnt up before! Everything was black, minus two steels. Even the clutch basket has heat markings on it!!

I threw another one in there, adjusted the throw-out bearing, and it's good to go. I was tempted to drop the oil and change the filter after seeing the fibers all over the inside, but I don't keep extras. I may still do that next week.

Oil was at the bottom of the window, so I added about a quarter of a quart of oil. I WAS hot-dogging the hell out of the bike for 10 minutes straight, so who knows what the root cause of it was.

Oh well, I'll take it a little easy on her from now on. I sure love throwing it around in the curves though.

FWIW, the XS11 shares plates with the XS650. Mike's XS has several options in clutch plates.

Yeah, that was the first place I went. Not cheap, that's for sure! Fortunately, I have a spare engine, so I pulled the whole clutch basket out of it. I'm good to go.
