PS by now you have probably fuel-fouled the plugs for the non-firing cylinders.

              Pickup coil wires: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543
The connector behind the fuse block: http://www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/connectors.html Check with Tony to see if he has the connectors in stock. If not, you can find them at some auto parts stores or electronics shops. I would cut the old connector off at the wire, and crimp new on for that part. It does carry a LOT of amps, and ANY resistance ups the temp, and resistance in the connector.

Alternator wires. Put new connectors on and it will solve the melting issue. Those old corroded connectors create a lot of resistance there and resistance causes heat. Some people have actually eliminated the spade connectors and just butt connected the wires there.

cleaned all wire connectors behind fuse box and next to.
took out battery to check water level.
need to put battery in and turn the key and watch what happens.

                            Hey Earl,

Aside from the PU coil wires, another place to look is a the TCI and it's plugs. Corrosion can build up there also. And inside the TCI. The solder joints from the external plugs to the circuit board...can also corrode or go bad. Some folks have had to RESWEAT the solder joints inside the TCI case to get it to work right again.

To check spark on a coil, you need to leave one plug wire attached to the plug in the engine, lay the other with a plug in the wire against the engine/head so that it can ground against the head to complete the circuit between the 2 plugs that the coil services. Then you can turn the engine with the starter button and check for spark If you see spark on 1-4 but not 2-3, then you can swap the COIL wires/plugs, the gray and orange to the other harness plug/ swap them. Then retest. IF then the spark is on 2-3 and not 1-4, then you know the coils are OK. If after the swap, the now swapped 1-4 fire, but not the 2-3 coil, then the TCI /pickup coils are working, but you've found a bad ignition spark plug coil.

I know you said you got one from a working bike, but if these are OEM coils, they are 35+ years old and on their last legs, and would highly suggest putting on NEW Hi output coils to finally eliminate that as a source of problems. Remember, with the 80, you'll need to bypass the Ballast Resistor with a new set of 3.0 ohm coils.
