  • Petcock question on the 1979 XS 1100 special

I have a question with regard to the petcock on my XS 1100 Special and the 4 hoses that connect to them.

If anyone has removed the tank, I am sure you know its a bitch to pull off.

I removed them in the past and no problem.

Today, I removed 3 of those hoses and they were hard to get off but I was patient, but on the 4th one (the last one) I pulled out the entire brass tubing that's connected to the pop metal completely off the left hand side petcock. At first I thought I broke it off, but it appears to have been pressed on from the factory. The brass tubing is straight and no obvious damage to the pop metal on the petcock. So I used a 2X4 and rubber mallet and lightly tapped the brass tubing back in and it appears to be good and tight.

Should I replace the entire left side petcock, if even available? or do you think I'll be okay? (about possible leak?)

I did try to remove the fuel petcocks with a large Phillips screw driver and oh man, I could not budge them at all. Must one use an impact driver to take these off?

    Thanks for any replies.

Correct driver for those screws is NOT a phillips driver. It is a JIS driver(Japenese Industrial Standard). In fact ALL the different, what you'd think are phillips type screws are ALL JIS. You can go to your local NAPA or such and purchase JIS drivers of different sizes. For the most part, a JIS driver equivalent to a #2 phillips driver will do majority of necessary work.

You will be fine if you tapped the outlet tube back into the tap, it is just pressed in as you said.

I have had that happen a couple of times...Just pressed the nipple back in and had no further issues with it, other than it may pull out again next time you remove the lines, but it shouldn't leak at all in the meantime.

I have also had the brass nipples come out. Scuff them up with some sand paper and a little dab of epoxy glue and tap them right back in. Never had one of them come loose again.
Slow down and enjoy life. If you are in that much of a hurry, you should have left eariler.
