  • octy just crapped out on me...freaked out now...

I just went to take a ride, and smelled gas like crazy. sure enough, gas was leaking out of carbs 1 and 3. thought it might've been stuck floats, but after I removed the carbs, I checked the octy. as soon as I turned the petcock (left side) on, it POURED out of the T-connections. here's where I'm scared s#$@less: cylinder 1 had a literal small pool coming back from the head to the carb boot. did it get into the cylinder and ultimately the oil??? I've had GARBAGE luck the past two weeks...

    ahhh, i'm an idiot...

nevermind the "turning on the petcocks" thing. I guess it would come out regardless. main point is, I HOPE that gas didn't get into the oil...JUST changed it. Why would it only be carbs 1 and 3, though??? seems like a coincidence...

Take the octy off and throw it as far as you can.

Get the carbs right and you are golden.

        Second that

Agree with Greg,,,,,toss the octy away, clean the carbs, turn off the petcocks when done riding for the day. And, or put in a inline on off plastic turnoff if worried. There is a mod to turn the petcocks into an off, on, prime position- maybe do a search, I faintly remember that I plugged one of the holes to do it in the petcocks or grinded one of the internal bumps, as I did it over twenty years ago.....the octy will lead you to hours of frustration----ditch it, bury it, or you will have horrible nightmares. Oh yeah, change the oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mike in Sun Diego

Drain the oil, and heat it in a pan outside, using an electric heating pad.
Bring to a slow simmer, and measure the temperature with a candy thermometer. When it gets to 250 F, let it stew until it quits bubbling.
          Cool, filter, and reuse.

Turn "on" both left and right side petcocks. Does gas still flow out?

Never had a problem with the "octy". If your carbs are right, you will never have a problem like you are describing.

ok...I just cleaned out the carbs. They were actually kind of dirty...I'm hoping they were just gunked up.

Oh...I usually keep the right petcock off, because it needs a rebuild. No need for both really while running the octy anyway, correct??

I'm going to double check that petcock right now...

when I turn the left petcock ON, it comes out of both of the "T" connections...

I just don't want to put the carbs back on after all this, and have to spend MORE money on yet another oil change. I'm going to put some inline switches on there as peace of mind.

like I said...cleaned the carbs out (the air jets seemed to be a bit gunked up), set the floats, etc. hopefully that does it...

Coming out the t connections? So, it's leaking BETWEEN the carbs?

It sounds like it might not be the shutoff valve. Fuel is supposed to always flow to, but not through the octopus. Unless, vacuum is pulling it open. Even if it fails, the float valves are supposed to close.

If you decide to throw it. Throw it at me.

Yeah, when i took the carbs off, i only took the t-hose connectios OFF the actual carb metal t's. while they (the carbs) were off, i tried turning the petcock on slowly. gas came ripping out of both t's....

If it's leaking BETWEEN the carbs it's not getting into the oil. The rubber on the t's is bad.

Marty, you posted up the t repair in repairs but the pics are all gone. You know, peel the old rubber off and use o rings to repair it? I've used that several times and it works well and haven't had a failure yet.

I've done it both on Okie and The Hornet.

Maybe you still have those pics somewhere and can guide him through it.
