  • Odometer not working.

79 XS11 Special. Speedo quit. Cable had snapped. Replaced cable and drive unit . Speedo works, but the odometer does not. Any suggestions before I look inside.

    Thank you. Crusty

You have probably already tried this but turning the tripmeter reset knob might help?

Yes, reset to 0000. OD reads 16km after 2 months of riding. So it does slowly turn.

Just get another speedometer. I have a big box full of speedometers I've TRIED to fix.

There's a nylon gear in there that has worn out.

You can obtain other vintage Yamaha speedo/tach assemblies. Many of them have common a speedo cable.

I used a Speedo from an XS650 that had been wrecked and parted out. The odometer had 62 miles when I bought it.

It worked sweet in the XJ1100.

Surgery was required to bring out the trip odometer shaft and knob. The stock XJ1100 has a completely different scheme for resetting the trip odometer.

I had to take everything out of the housing, replace the speedo, drill a hole in the side of the housing and install the new speedo.

After re-assembly, you would never know it was not stock unless you were an XS/XJ junkie. Two clues are that the stock XJ speedo only goes to 80 mph while the XS650 speedo goes to 120 MPH (if I recall correctly). The other clue is the the modified speedo has a trip reset knob out the side while the stock XJ has a trip reset button on the face of the speedo housing.

Compared to fixing a second gear slippage, a speedo transplant is a breeze.
