You want the gap to be on the wide side of the range. The gap shrinks as things wear.

Intake should be .006" - .008" or .16 - .20 mm
Exhaust .008" - .010" or .21 - .25 mm
Set to the wide end because these engines don't wear at the cam or the shim, they wear at the valve seat. That means the gap gets SMALLER as it wears.
Looks like you are good actually. .28 is a little wide but will run fine. Maybe a little noisy.Greg

Thanks for the heads up! Well if it looks good then I will run with it then. Pick up some gasket maker on the way home and button it up and toss the vacuum gauge back on and sync again.79 SF

I am reading up on valves and also looking in my manual. A lot of good posts on here but now that all the pics are gone that stinks. I am a picture person

That would work if I had one......PO took it off as it has a 4 into 1 on it.
I do have a set of factory pipes that came wit hit but they are not pretty at all. I may see if I can get them to work out as the 4 to 1 has been hit pretty good on the underside.79 SF

You can always MAKE something to work like a center stand! Best thing is to try and find a center stand, and just insert the two bolts when you need to use it. If not, try using some 2X4 blocks with a notch in one end for the frame. You do NOT need to lift the bike, just keep it almost upright.Ray Matteis

What is the key to idle mixture setting?
I have some time Thursday and am thinking of pulling the carbs off again and going through them one more time........I want to get this thing running good before I decide its fate.........79 SF

For a correct sync, idle may have to be lowered as you sync.Last edited by motoman; 08-29-2017, 10:05 PM.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Thanks will try that but still want to pull the carbs one more time for ****s and giggles..........
After doing all the stuff tonight I put the gauge on there and all carbs were really close......I just had to tweak number 1 about an 1/8th of a turn to get it with the rest.
I just want this thing to run good when its on the street it always works great in the garage..........79 SF

You may be able to spray starter spray around the throttle shaft seals while the engine is idling to see if the idle changes. The idea is the the starter spray fumes get sucked into the leaky throttle shaft seal(s) causing idle RPMs to increase.82 XJ1100 - sold
