    Hi Ben

    Things about Gen 1 FJRs

    1. Heat on legs can be excruciating. I am in the throes of installing the "Cromeit heat fixes". Each side is different. Re-assembling the fairings is a royal pain.

    2. The ignition switch has two fat wires that carry too much current. The solder connections inside the switch eventually unsolder themselves. This stranded me for a day in Meadows of Dan VA. I was able to hot wire the ignition circuit. Now I carry the the hotwire assembly under the seat with the tool kit. A permanent fix would be to install a relay similar to what I did with my XJ1100 to install loud horns.

    3. Gen 1 FJRs can have a loud valve tick. These were the subject of a recall. If your potential purchase is quiet when running, it is probably fine.

      Hi madmax,
agreed that to turn the bike into an ugly copy of a Can-Am Spyder would take a lot of work but to buy and add a used sidecar to it wouldn't take much work at all.
Either option could be done for far less money than the ~$4K you were thinking of spending on another bike.

Fred has a good point, i bought a brand new Velorex in '94 for about $1200 and it hooked up no problemo to my then XS11 SH.

Although it's hard to make out, the Velorex is attached here ready to go to Americade '94

Cristina found it very comfortable lol

And yeah, they drive funny. Not ha ha funny, either!
Former owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!

          Hi DAVINCI,
FWIW today's price for Velorex' least costly model 562 is $2,999 FOB Tampa Florida.
My son just connected a $500 very used #562 to a friend's early Gold Wing.
The rig survived a return trip between Saskatoon and Vancouver Island despite the early #562's 15mm axle (the newer models are 20mm) and a rear tire that had balded out and was replaced on the Island.
The friend's 11 year old son also found the Velorex very comfortable although he was too big to need a baby-seat.
Agreed they drive funny but that's not a glitch, it's a feature.
Driving a rig is like knowing you're to be hanged next week, it concentrates the mind wonderfully.

            Ben,

I am happy to do a frame swap with you. I've had the motor in and out of my bike three times this year already, I have a frame jig, I live an hour from you, and if I can find a trailer will be picking up a potential "donor" bike frame today. Just let know, I'll shoot you a PM with my number.
