Need help tuning the xs11

Hey y'all!
Finally getting a break in the workload to do some work on the XS. So I found a solution to the filter part. Went to HD and found the 2" to 2" rubber coupler and they fit the filters perfectly! The carb part they are slightly big but the hose clamp brings it down enough to clamp it down tight enough. I trimmed the "flange" in half and took out a few of the "ribs" and then glued in the filter flange with 3M weather stripping adhesive. So it extends them out about 2.5" and un-obstructs the carb inlets so hopefully that'll solve that issue. While I was at it I picked out some REALLY COOL paint to repaint the bike while it is apart. So I updated the photos in google so check them out and tell me if I am going in the right direction!

First time spraying candy colors but it came out ok! Last picture posted today was the carbs mounted with the extensions...too tired to fire it up tonight so I'm going to wait until tomorrow to sync the carbs and check the timing. Need to figure out a color for the vinyl to make a new seat cover. Any suggestions?

Looks good dakota.........now, you should of spent that kinda time cleaning internals of those carbs...no joke, or they are gonna come back and 'bite' you...that's a given.

Actually I cleaned them very thoroughly on the inside....it was the whole start of this project, since it wasn't running right and running lean. Cleaned, rejetted then just a quick buff of the top covers and bowls just because ....So I am hoping that all this work it will run better and look good doing it!

I am looking at the rubber "compression" tubing hooking the pods to the carbs. Those internal lips could wreak havoc on carburetion. Not saying it will, but that is going to disrupt airflow quite a bit any way you slice it. I was not aware of those while you were working on your carburetion issue. "SMOOTH" airflow is the operative term for any air intake.

Yeah I thought about that too, but in the course of looking for something that would work, that was the best I could muster at HD....I need to go to a plumbing store and check their inventory, but I figured if this improves the overall performance initially I'll invest some more time and money in getting something that is better. I need new "PODS" anyway...Anything better than what it was will be an improvement.

Hey Tim,

Compared to those big lipped pod mounts, the accordian velocity stacks will definitely be an improvement. But like Bonz said, the scalloped inner edges could introduce some turbulence, but hopefully not very much compared to the amount of restriction the big lips would have caused. Not sure if you used the Pod Filter Velocity Stack Mod tech tip, yes, it was a 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" rubber coupler instead of a 2" but it was just a regular smooth tube, not accordian/flexible.



And when cut in half, they stretch over the carb throat to secure nicely with the clamp.



And the other end then gets the 1-1/4" PVC Coupler section (not just PVC pipe)that the Pod filter can then mount onto.



Anyways, good luck, waiting to hear how it performs. Paint job looks awesome, but can't suggest a seat/vinyl color.

Thanks for the suggestion and pics! I did look at that tip...but when I went to the HD isle I couldnt find any like what was in the photos...so I just op'd for what was available...I trimmed out one of the inside scallops as well as the one outside to make room for the clamp...so if I remember correctly there was only 2 of them on the inside....so I hope the turbulance will be minimal...if not I will search out the others...one thing I was trying to minimize was all the hose clamps. So there is room for improvement I'm sure. (My design) But I truely do appreciate EVERYONES input, whether its liked or not... :-D that's why I come here! Thanks for the kind words on the paint...I still have a lot to learn on painting too. Candy colors take a lot more attention to detail and a different technique to spray! I'll post an update once I run her....need a name for her too.

So I am noticing the rubber hose that goes into the coupler...is that the vent hose that comes off the carb? Does that have to have low pressure/vacuum on it? Because in the past i just had it vented to the atmosphere. I know they attached to the airbox, so i am curious to know if they need a vacuum and would that affect the way it runs too?

TC probably has a few thoughts on this as well, my experience says those simply need to be vented somewhere into calm air. On my ZRX 1200 with pods I ran the vent tubes up under the tank or under the side covers where they are in calm air so side winds, tailwinds or on coming air from moving forward doesn't mess with the carbs. Vent tubes allow atmospheric pressure equalization within the carburetors. If you have varying pressures because of air currents around the opening of the vent tubes, carburetion gets wonky.

ahhhh yes....thata makesa a sensa! So, I may want to lengthen the tubes then have maybe even put a small filter on them and stow them under the seat or tank like you suggest.

Keep the tubes as close to stock length as you can, longer or shorter can change the dynamic. Imagine sucking through a very short piece of a straw or a very long straw. Or try it and see what I mean.

Even stock length with a small breather filter on each end tucked up in calm air will be fine. Breather filter will reduce the effects of swirling air currents as well.

On my ZRX, stock vent tubes are simply left open at the end and routed to calm air space, works perfect.
