Need help tuning the xs11

Here is the needle....looks like it (the c clip) is on the 3 space.
Also on a note...is there a better photo manager than Photobucket???? The ads there are INSANE! It used to be a good site and free....now it is an every 10 seconds!

My "thumbs up" was responding to the post that you had cleaned them thoroughly the first time. I responded to it on my phone and didn't see you had posted a picture of the needle after the one about cleaning.

Third clip position sure doesn't seem to lean to me. For grins lower it to the fourth and see what it does. The needle controls the 6,000 RPM area that you are having troubles with the stuttering on accel. That will help compensate somewhat for the main jet on accel if it is too small. Fairly easy trial and error.

Thanks Howard! Cool...I think I had tried that before and it didn't work well, but maybe I'll try that again with next larger jet if the jet by itself doesn't improve it. Still need to get the kits ordered. Mikes didn't have the Pilot screw and it doesn't look to be available. I have noticed other pilot screws that have a step in the end rather than a fine taper....can these be used too it the others are not available?

If the carbs haven't been cleaned since 2000, you are doing right to get that done before compensating jetting, etc., for dirty carbs.

Yeah i figured it needed to be done again....put a lot of fuel and miles on it since then. I'm glad I did since those pilots screws were screwed up! :P And not knowing about the airfilter thing really will make things better too once I do the mod. I love the way this bike rides and to me it is comfortable and I have rode other bikes (thinking about getting a new one) but I never really liked them as much as this one. Besides I only paid $750 for it and have put over 40k miles on it. I think I got my moneys worth out of it! hahaha!

Okay, first, did you see the links I provided you in the membership confirmation email? You can download the service manuals which has SOME exploded views of some of the systems.

Bonz, the butterfly shafts are held in place with roller bearings and such, the seals just keep the things vacuum tight, so you would not be able to notice any additional slop in their action with damaged seals. Tim, If the carbs were still on the bike/engine, we would tell you how to test for leaking seals by running the engine and the spraying an combustible solution around the shafts and listen for any rpm changes/increases. Using an UNLIT barbecue lighter with a long nose to spray the lighter fluid/vapor around the seals for the same type of test, just a little safer since it evaporates instead of condensing on the carb bodies which could be a fire hazard.

Also, sorry abour father, I lost mine also 17 years ago in 2000.

This is the only place that I've seen for NEW pilot jet screws, they are in a kit (K&L Brand), so we know the actual jets or the float needle/seats are GENERIC and not genuine Mikuni, but the gasket looks correct. Some folks have tried the slide needle, but say it's not the right profile! So...essentially you get the gasket and pilot screw, folks have used the float needle/seats.

The OEM parts # is 2A2-14923-00-00, similar prices on Amazon, BikeBandit, etc.

MikesXS has the butterfly shaft seals:

The "FUN" with the seals is that you will need to remove the butterflies, the screws are PEENED to prevent them from backing out and getting sucked in to the intakes. Folks have removed them after slightly grinding the peen area and then used LOCKTITE to put them back in.

Yes, photobucket is a PITA, but it's FREE, they offer an ad-free version for less than $20.00 a year. I just put up with the ads.

Ditto what Skids said, you are doing the right thing, and then play with parts and pieces after you get them back to where they were.

Hey Thanks T.C.! When I have more time on monday I'll check those places out...I did find the ones on ebay and ordered those but only wanted the screws and gaskets....guess I should have waited for your response :P oh well...but I'll check them out too, and may even get them anyways. Thanks, my dad was only 62...too young! He is missed every day....Mom is still here though and just had her for a fun weekend last weekend...that'll be a tough one for our family when it's her time.
Ok, well, ya'll have a great weekend and looking forward to dailing this thing in with all the new info I have!

Ok... so I checked those out and it looks like the same kit I got off of ebay. I won't use the slide needle. I will probably use the needle and seat, pilot screws and gaskets. So, what part does the Air pilot Jet play in the hole tuning issue? My carbs have the stock 180 in it....Is this something that is ok stock or should this be changed out to a larger one also?
As for the membership email....I have been a member here since 2001 so I wouldn't even have a clue where it is....may have accidentally deleted it, I wasn't very internet savvy then. If you could, could you resend it?

on second thought....I think I'll pass on the needles and seats and reuse my old ones since they weren't leaking...Looking at the machining that is done on them, I will pass. I test fit one of the gaskets and it doesn't fit well and I had to use my witney punch to fix it, so it would fit correctly. The pilot screw seems ok for now. I got one carb cleaned and blow out, the tops all polished and started on one of the bowls...I'll have to break out the dremel to polish the places the buffer can't get into.
I'm beat and outa here!

Make sure those new bowl gaskets, when sitting in place don't go beyond sides of carb body to the inside.....not even the slightest! If they do, leave them in place and trim the excess off with an x-acto knife or new singe-ege razor blade. Even the slightest hang-over of gaskets, when bowls are tightened down will become more-so from being compressed somewhat. This can and will cause floats to hang up on the excess gasket.
