Went to ride a half mile to the store, heard squeaking (akin to that of a car belt), but it stopped after a literal 3 seconds. Freaked me out, so I parked it. I JUST had my baby running PERFECTLY, now this!

Ouch....
Did the noise seem to match engine RPM or road speed?-- Scott

I'm gonna check the front calipers...it VERY WELL could've been a bit of brake dust / something with those, because my brother and I have been riding A LOT lately.
It happened when I took off from my parking space...I let the clutch out, started to go, and heard the squeaking. It only lasted for about 2 seconds, but here's the thing: it DEFINITELY coincided (sound-wise) with rpms. This worries the hell out of me.80' XS1100 SG "Dottie"

Tach and engine would be culprit ?76 XS650 C ROADSTER

The tach's just a galvanometer, there's no spin to it.
The speedometer or cable would howl like Phil suggested but unless it was misheard, that wouldn't follow engine RPM.
Maybe the cam chain adjuster slipped? If the engine doesn't jump time and eat the valves, the chain'll make a racket that sounds like the engine's screaming.-- Scott

I was going to mention speedometer/cable, yesterday, but I deleted my post because it seemed like uneducated guessing.
Now that I see someone else suggested it, I should mention my speedometer went bad last year and it made a whirring noise that quickly developed into a squeal.
It would be RPM-related if you didn't switch gears while you heard it.-Mike

My '79 made a screaming, whirring clatter at all RPMs but, yeah, it was louder at or near idle; scared me, I thought it was gonna blow up.
I'm trying to think of simple stuff that's not the speedometer or intrinsically fatal like a dying rotating assembly and easy to fix like a loose cam chain.-- Scott
