32K miles is barely broken in for these machines. Have you done a compression test on it lately? Warm it up, pull all plugs, test, record, and then add teaspoon of oil in plug holes, spin engine a few times with rags stuffed over plug holes lest you want oil squirted everywhere, and then retest. IF significantly higher values, then rings are suspect and possibly worn. IF no appreciable increase in values....but values near spec...then engine in good shape otherwise. If values are low and no increase with oil, then valves are suspect as well as possibly just worn rings. Remember petcocks off, FULL WOT during test.

As for the Rotella, Tod/TrBig burned up a few engines using it, so he would probably suggest not using it, plus is a lower viscosity rating anyways, with burning/leaking oil, you wouldn't want to go THINNER.

I would have to agree with use of Rotella. My experience using it was changing oil to its use. I made a day ride from Grand Junction, Co. south 165mi. one-way to Durango, Co. and back, which was twice over two passes(Red Mountain/Molass Passes). Since bike normally doesn't use oil to speak of, was amazed as to its usage of 2quarts that trip, and the upper valve-train noise. After home, drained oil/filter change and installed 20-50w Vavoline again. No real usage of oil, and valve train substantially quieter again. That was approx. some 5-6yrs. ago.

What kind of Rotella did you use? Synthetic, semisyn, or something else?

Apparently used the kind that was too slick to stay where it was supposed to.
Since I've slept since then, thinkin' maybe it was the dino heavy duty use 20-50w that was available then.....and maybe still for all I know.

            Cylinder Leakage Test

If compression is low, run a cylinder leakage test. Compression loss can be valves, rings, or head gasket. Leakage percentage should be a maximum of 15%. Cylinders with more have a problem.

If compression is low, you will get more crankcase gases coming out of the vent hose (I think).

Eventually they will all be oil treads

Since this has morphed into an oil thread (don't they all eventially? ), and there were questions about how dirty was the oil REALLY, the attached are photos taken today of some extracted from the bike using the turkey baster (don't tell) 220km after the oil change.

The nice amber oil is a sample from the jug of leftover Castrol GTX 20W-50 that went into the bike.

The oil level was at the top line when filled.

Then went for a ride in the cool air - god I love this bike
