  • Ignition problem

    I am working on a bike for a friend. It came to me with the fuse block hanging off the side and the headlight apart. The starter button is broken. I was able to get it to start by bypassing the button, at first. I switched the fuse block out and mounted it and now I have no power coming back from the ignition switch it seems. The wires don't seem to correlate to the schematic in the book, I will post a pic or two of that. I have power at the three fuses on the right. No power into or out of the R/W and R/Y on the left end of the fuse block. I'm trying figure out where the power comes from going into that fuse. Can someone point me in the right direction?

    BtW, manufacture date is 7/79 so I assume that it would be a 1980 model. Could be wrong though. It's either an SG or SF








    Also, the yellow wire has no mate, I did read in the Electrical repair section, Steves troubleshooting thread, and it appears that this yellow wire is not used on the 80 model. Thoughts?

    I would get two and the springs as the horn button is just as old as your broken start button and the springs are probably rusty by now.

      Hey Tarzan,

      Okay, on one side of the fuseblock are supposed to be the blue wire, and the 3 brown wires. The 3 brown wires come off of a common splice/split, and I think you may have them not connected right...like 2 of the supply brown wires going to both sides of the one of the fuse panels/slots. Strip back the harness a bit to trace the brown wires back to their common split, then you'll know that they ALL go to one side of the panel. They power the Red/White and red/yellow circuits across the panel. Would suggest using a voltmeter, and check for 12V on each of the 3 common browns as well as which blue is the + one. The 4th brown wire is the other side that is fed by the 12V+ brown one. Hope this helps!

        Thanks guys. Yes, that makes sense TC. Thank you. Sometimes the obvious is staring me right in the face and I look right past it. I thought I transferred them as they were. I just tested the wires and sure enough, I had two wires crossed. And one set was reversed top for bottom. It starts right up now.
