Well, I finally did it. I pulled the crabs, being a carb pulling virgin.
Was trying to track down a bad smelly leak into both the air box and into the crankcase.
Decided to examine the floats. The floats were set to the low end of the range for a 79f, which is 24.7 to 26.7 mm. AND, two would bottom out on the upper carb body before the spring loaded needle would fully depress.
Reset all of them to about 26 mm which resolved the interference problem. Also adjusted the float drop to ensure adequate full entry.
Hoping for the best, petcocks rebuilt, carbs adjusted, and remounted all with the excellent help of forum members.
