    Well, I finally did it. I pulled the crabs, being a carb pulling virgin.

    Was trying to track down a bad smelly leak into both the air box and into the crankcase.

    Decided to examine the floats. The floats were set to the low end of the range for a 79f, which is 24.7 to 26.7 mm. AND, two would bottom out on the upper carb body before the spring loaded needle would fully depress.

    Reset all of them to about 26 mm which resolved the interference problem. Also adjusted the float drop to ensure adequate full entry.

    Hoping for the best, petcocks rebuilt, carbs adjusted, and remounted all with the excellent help of forum members.

    For one thing, you do not want the floats dropping too low, this may/will cause flooding issues. Very little float travel is needed to let an adequate amount of fuel in. I would tap on the carbs with a screwdriver handle during inital filling the bowls, low floats have a much better chance of becoming stuck and or cocking the needle out of it's seat which = flood.

      Thank you!

      I was only getting about 4 or 5 mm of float drop at the center of the floats, and was not able to force much air through with the breathalyzer test (blowing air through fuel hose). So I added a little more till I got 10 mm of float drop and could blow some air through the lines. I don't think the float pins are moving enough to cause a problem, nor do they seem to be binding at the bottom of the bowl. We'll see!
