  • random "bogging" while riding

so i've got this 80 special i picked up the other day and have been riding here and there between the rains. every once in a while i'll be at a cruising speed and go to accelerate and it feels like it wants to get up and go for a split second then bogs down and barely goes anywhere. if you get down to almost a stop and accelerate it wakes up and goes like a banshee. i've tried running it on the reserve to see if that makes a difference and it does not. it does have pod filters one of which is a foam uni filter and the others are a generic cone style. any ideas?

    Cone

filters with chrome screening, made by emgo. There are a number of mods you can try on these to allow the engine to breath. There is an excess of mounting ring inside the filter that gets in the way of the air jets in the bell where they mount. Either you cut this away or make extensions with pvc pipe and radiator hose. I think there are instructions here to detail this ?

May also want to check your pick up coil wires for faults.

Pick up coil wiring has been an issue. The wires become broken within the insulation and do not outwardly appear broken. The procedure to check them is here:

If it cuts out at constant speed, it could be one of three things that I can think of:

Gas tank is not breathing through the cap.

The automatic petcock function is not opening the fuel flow fully (try prime).

The pickup coils wires need work.

            The plugs are fuel fouling.

One more possibility. I had a high voltage coil give me fits when it heated up. This was a difficult thing to diagnose because I always checked it cold.

The more I think about it, it seems to happen when the bike is warmed up. Cold it runs like a Usain bolt. Plugs are good and new.

Just a little update, I checked the pickup coil wires and 3 of the 4 were broke. I'm really surprised or ran at all.
