  • Thank you for the help (the sg lives!!!)

Man, after rebuilding the solenoid, cleaning off all electrical contact surfaces, etc...it started RIGHT UP, NO HASSLE! I worked on it all day then rode it up to my work. All of my co-workers/regulars have been hearing me talk and stress about these bikes when I'm not around them, haha. I walked in the bar, covered in oil and gas, grease smudges on my face; just generally looking crazy. Burst in, looked at all of my now confused and slightly terrified regulars, looked at a fellow bartender, slammed my helmet on the bat and just said "I need a @%$#&*! beer...STAT". Then we all had a cheers to it!!! I'm about to go ride in a few! I'll post pics when I get to a computer!!

It IS running a bit lean... I have the carbs bench synched, but headers 3&4 are a bit blue. I can't remember if they were like that before or not. Should I take the plastic off the pilot screw top?? I backed it out a 1/4 turn...seems a bit better...

Once you get it properly synced, you will feel the difference! The engine will be a LOT smoother, and it should pull just a little better from idle all the way to redline.
And yes, remove the caps to set the idle mixture AFTER the first go with the sync, then set the sync again. You will then know the power of the force.

I just got done with a good half-hour ride home...i'll tell you, I don't remember my 79' sounding like this one does. it has the same exhaust, but man...this thing sounds like a friggin' diesel train engine, especially the low / right before mids!! I'll take that over a Harley ANY day. There's nothing like it!!

here she is...79' carbs, and the tank is also from my 79 (for now). I have to rebuild, or replace the petcocks on the 80 tank. other than that, everything works surprisingly well. the turn signals blink a bit slow, and the front brake is pretty stiff, but not stuck...gotta look into that.

Congrats man. I've been following your trauma, glad to see it on the road!

Thanks a ton!!! I honestly can't wait to wake up, and ride this thing again. There's a cycle superstore a MILE from the lady's house (where I'm at), so I'm getting a synch-tool first thing tomorrow! Like I said... still some work to be done, but it's more than ridable! Poor ol' lady-friend...we haven't hung out as much because "I HAVE TO GET THIS THING KILLING IT". Luckily, after she and I went and had a drink when I got it done, I was so relieved and in calm disbelief that she finally understood, haha. Trooper she is. I have to plumb it in a more convenient way to get used to the synch process. I'm thinking about doing away with the octy, as I've been turning the petcocks off as a precaution anyway...

I've only putzed on a couple specials, but I think the agreeable consensus is to ditch that thing. If you already turn them off its a redundant failure point anyway.
