The letters and numbers suggest a VDO 476 temperature sender.

My guess is...
The previous owner lost or misplaced the oil plug and this fit the hole?Bikes that I have owned and enjoyed...

BTW, a spark plug will fit it, too. and the spark plug will fit the rear pumpkin fill hole...looks kinda steampunk cool

Maybe a P.O. had a temperature gauge. The oil drain is one of the spots you can use for the sender without adapters or drilling holes.

Yamaha used the drain plug sender on the XS11's. I know because I had one on my '78, dealer installed "factory" option.Ray Matteis
