The letters and numbers suggest a VDO 476 temperature sender.

Or were you talking about the grunge on the sender?

I have not seen one before on an XS1100, is this factory or add on for the XS1100?

        My guess is...

The previous owner lost or misplaced the oil plug and this fit the hole?

          Exactly!

BTW, a spark plug will fit it, too. and the spark plug will fit the rear pumpkin fill hole...looks kinda steampunk cool
Former owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!

Maybe a P.O. had a temperature gauge. The oil drain is one of the spots you can use for the sender without adapters or drilling holes.

Yamaha used the drain plug sender on the XS11's. I know because I had one on my '78, dealer installed "factory" option.
