Is the inside part of the cable rotating when you spin the front wheel?

If the outer sheath is still good, you can buy the inside cable at almost any auto parts store. It uses the same one as a car, about $6...
Also, shoot some silicon lube up into the speedo BEFORE putting the new cable on. If the grease inside is getting hard (after 35 years?!?!) it can cause the cable to break in a hurry. DAMHIKIJK

Not quite the same......square ends are metric in measurement.....which is this case is just a squeak smaller than the older American cars speedo cables.........BTDT making up a new cable for my Venturer some 34yrs. ago, hammering the square end in a special die made just for that in the shop. Had to enclose the stomped squared ends in cable with brass shim stock and re-stomp to make them just a tad smaller diameter in order to fit the square recesses in speedo and wheel assembly.

Just another suggestion. Sometimes the speedo can seize and then it can break the cable!? Since you have part of the broken cable, you can chuck it into a drill and stick it into the speedo and then give it a spin and see if the speedo responds and shows a reading/speed? Also, can't recall which way it spins, but you can look at the end while it's still attached to the front wheel and spin the wheel to see which way it rotates, and then match that with the drill. This way you may be able to figure out for sure that you just need a cable, or if you will also need to replace your speedo!?

Put the drill in reverse, that is the correct direction for checking the speedometer operation.

Not anymore. I want to ALL the local Auto Parts stores looking for a new cable for my stepsons KLR. Even the old timers at Napa didnt carry them anymore. Autozone gave me quizzical looks. Oreilly, Advance, Autozone, Car Quest, NAPA and the other 4 local shops dont carry them anymore. I was shocked. eBay has em tho. lame
