If the outer sheath is still good, you can buy the inside cable at almost any auto parts store. It uses the same one as a car, about $6...
Also, shoot some silicon lube up into the speedo BEFORE putting the new cable on. If the grease inside is getting hard (after 35 years?!?!) it can cause the cable to break in a hurry. DAMHIKIJKRay Matteis

Just another suggestion. Sometimes the speedo can seize and then it can break the cable!? Since you have part of the broken cable, you can chuck it into a drill and stick it into the speedo and then give it a spin and see if the speedo responds and shows a reading/speed? Also, can't recall which way it spins, but you can look at the end while it's still attached to the front wheel and spin the wheel to see which way it rotates, and then match that with the drill. This way you may be able to figure out for sure that you just need a cable, or if you will also need to replace your speedo!?
