  • gaskets

Every time I pull a cover from this old bike, half the gasket sticks to the cover and the other half stays on the bike. I'm going to go out on a limb to say that I need to replace all these gaskets, which aren't cheap. Where do you guys buy gasket replacements? Yamama OEM or aftermarket? I'm not a fan of glue that some people use.

Also to clean the dried up gasket from the cover/bike, I saw a youtube video of a yellow 3m plastic pad that seems to take the gasket off nicely without damaging the aluminum. I'll apply diesel or gasket remove on the gasket first and then brush it off.

most of us just use the RTV or Yamabond. but if you want a gasket here is an inexpensive set (no head or jug base gaskets)

Do you use RTV instead of a valve cover gasket?

          Hi tcoop,

Do you also use it on the engine side cases that get really hot, and no oil leaks?
RTV sounds easy to use, I'm assuming that you just squeeze it out of a tube?

          But my real question is:
The next time you take the covers off, what's involved in cleanup of the old RTV?

          Thanks,

Trick for that is, loosen, not remove ALL hold down bolts and using a screwdriver handle and tap the cover to be removed first. This loosens and helps free up gasket all way around prior to removal.

I've bought this set from this seller three times. I had a problem with one head gasket and the guy made it right immediately. HIGHLY recommend this seller.

I'm going to change the rings in one of my bikes within the next couple weeks and I have one of these sets ready for the task. The valve seals, head gasket, and etc. make this a really good deal.

              Just my 2-cents.

Not just regular RTV either. Use Permatex High Temp grey. None of the sidecovers nor oil pan have gaskets on them on my Venturer. Been that way now for some 9yrs. with not so much as a weep or wet spot around covers. Valve cover is the ONLY location of a new gasket. Not that I don't have the gaskets, as I still have new OEM gaskets still in their packages.

I use the high temp stuff. Just a small bead 1/8th in or so. put the cover in place and hand tighten the bolts, after about and hour I tighten the rest of the way. to take the cover off after removing the bolts tap with a rubber mallet to break the seal then peel the RTV off easy clean up.

I haven't had gaskets on both side covers or valve cover in years. I use good ole blue RTV, because that's what I have. None of them ever leak or are wet. I put just barely a smear on the cover, any more and it just squishes out when you tighten it up.YMMV

That works.........now just to figure out how to not lose exhaust off bike at speed.
