Sometimes the words work pretty well when you're trying to get a set of gears back into a 600 lb motorcycle hanging from the rafters of your garage at 3am the day you need to leave for a rally 900 miles away.
Don't ask me how I know that.Greg

Yea...wasn't no way I was going to get the air box in with the carbs mounted...removed carbs...put both the carbs & air box within the frame...than I mounted the carbs without any issue...getting the air box
lined up is another story...once I figured out the center bracket goes over
the mounting bracket...I thought I had it made...yea right...every time I
get one of the end carbs in the air box boot...one side or the other would
be 1/2" or more out from the carbs and it wouldn't move towards the carbs
when I tried to push the air box towards the carbs...I'm wondering if I have
the boots in the air box in the right position...on the mounting seam there
is a little nipple...I assume that needs to be lined up with the spot on the air
box housing...I have all those nipples at 12 o'clock if you was facing the air
box boots or pointing up towards the tank...The question is...do I have them
in the right position or should the nipple be pointing straight down towards
the ground...I'll be lucky if anybody understands a word of this...lol79 XS 1100 Special "Basket Case"

I just reinstalled the carbs on my '81 yesterday. The lips on the boots tend to fold over. I started with the left side, got it clamped in place, then fixed the trapped/folded lips working a screw driver around between the carb and the boot. Also, the breather hose was getting in the way, so I disconnected it from the air box and put it back after the carbs were on. Good luck, stick with it and it'll get there eventually.82J · 81SH · 79SF Fire Damage · 78E · 79F Parts Bike · 04 Buell Blast

It takes everything in place to get them on my bike but over time I have learnt not to do it when its cold that old rubber just does not flex well. The other thing CaptonZap said was Vaseline but any slippery substance works and the slicker the better. If you try sliding things in a dry hole there can be pain and blood involved.
Do not try to put carbs on box and force them into engine mounts if your mounts are old, you can crack them to where you have a vacuum leak.To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

I'm getting ready to go out for round 2...If I try the couple ways explained
above doesn't work straight away...I'm trying the video way...mount the carbs
in the air box first...than mount the carbs...I like the look of the air box over
the pod look...but hands down...the pods make life a lot easier...My budget is
at its limit...Them cheap pods fall apart so easy...K&N's I would need to take a
loan out...A friend gave me a set (2) K&N'S...One pod fits on 2 carbs...but due
to the tanks petcocks location...I can't use them...the petcocks hit the pods and that's without the fuel line connected...they are rather big...there isn't any
part number on them that I could see...I haven't seen anybody using them on
here or youtube on their XS's...Until I find a good set of pod...the stock air box
will be fine...79 XS 1100 Special "Basket Case"

You'll need a crankcase vent filter and a filter for the carb vents too.Last edited by BA80; 03-27-2016, 09:42 AM.Greg
