  • Running rich, I think

So I have gone through the electrical to confirm I have all good connections and good battery. Coils are in spec verified by 2 meters. Carbs have been torn down and cleaned throughly 3 times. Float adjusted to correct hight and verified by placing a clear tube from drain. Synced using home made tool with four bottles. Now the problem, spark plugs gapped at .030 and all 4 are sooty right before I checked gap and all plugs except #3 were slightly more than .030 and appeared hot the tips were starting to whiten so I re adjust all to .030 and now all sooty. Any thoughts? I'm all out of them.

Did you replace the jets? They actually do wear out over time. They are key to proper fuel mixture.
I have had many problems with aftermarket jets not being the size indicated on the jet. Only buy genuine Mikuni jets they are always right. A complete set of Mikuni jets (mains and pilot)on Amazon.com usually around 30$.

Yea I did, I actually forgot to mention that the mixture screws I needed to replace 2 of them PO had at some point wedged the tips in and broke off.

Hopefully you got the old tips out.
Look through this, the great pilot jet controverst. I think you might be having this problem.

I have all the old parts i swapped out for new ones when i did the rebuild (never hurts to have old/used spare parts) and from what i gathered from the posts in that conversation i have the correct ones, i compared all my new parts with the old when i pulled them. would opening the sparks up a little more be the answer? What about my mixture screw does that control the mixture through full throttle?

As long as the plug gap is between the recommended .028 to .032. Changing it out of that range will not help.
The mixture screw only has an effect from idle to around 1//4 throttle.
I had a similar problem on my sx11SG and found I had the wrong pilot jets. Here is a link that shows the two available. http://www.mikesxs.net/products-39.html#products
Take a close look at them.
Carb slide diaphrams and needle position is something else possible. Check to see if they move free and don't have any pinholes in them.

              Me too

I had the problem with the K&L jet = wrong size.

              Ran super rich.

After goosing it, idle stayed high @3k and would not go back down. Turn down the idle speed screw to compensate, and it dies.

So I finally had time to teardown the carbs. I got some real mikuni jets and replaced the ones that name in my k&l kit and when compared side by side there were differences very slight (almost unnoticeable) ones but still different. I got it to accelerate into 70 - 75, maybe faster Speedo is slightly off. But now new problem my headlight indicator flickers and sometimes stays on. Headlight operates like it's suppose too but indicator light still comes on.

Do some searches on the site for "RLU" the reverse lighting unit is under the seat above the battery. That is the source of the problem.
