    Hey MadHatter,

As was mentioned before, have you tried screwing the filter bolt into the engine case without the filter cup in place??

The PO may have used some thread lock on the cooler adapter bolt, and so it may be blocking the threads just above the point/depth where the old cooler bolt/adapter stopped in the engine case. You may need to get a 20mm x 1.5 pitch tap or thread chaser and run it GENTLY up into the engine case to see if it can clear the threads. The OEM filter bolt should be able to be threaded ALL the way into the engine case up to the point where the bolt threads stop, or pretty darn close to that! If it stops just a few threads/turns into the engine, then something is blocking it...ie. thread lock !?

I'm so sorry TC ...I thought I posted on the forum that I put this issue to
bed with the help of some outstanding knowledgeable members that stay
with it until we discovers my cover isn't the correct size...mine is only 45mm
and the XS1100's is 56.0mm...I will be picking up the right one later today...
I would like to know what bike my cover came off of...It looks just like a XS 1100s...Thanks

I'm happy to say...I just got back from trading the wrong cover for what appears to be the right cover...However, I do have a concern with this new
cover...Did the old XS's oil filter covers come with a drain bolt in the top of
the cover...Can't see where a drain bolt near the rim of the cover would let
much oil drain out...the drain bolt is located between the 2 little nipples that
prevents the cover from moving while its being tighten down to the engine
just a 1/4" or so from the mating rim surface...Someone needs to tell why
they needed to put a drain bolt there...??????? Thanks

The OEM cup did not have a drain bolt. However, sounds like the owner of that cup got tired of getting hot oil all over their hands/floor, etc. when trying to take the cup/filter off with it still full of oil. The cup doesn't drain when you drain the crankcase. So...having a drain plug allows one to remove a little oil from the cup prior to removing it so that it doesn't make such a mess! However, having it between the 2 corner alignment marks seems like it would be towards the rear, next to the crankcase cover, not a lot of room there??

I installed a filter cup drain plug on every one of my xs11's.

I bet you didn't install them near the rim/mating surface ??? I bet the guy
that install this drain plug had second thought after the first oil change...
