Mine was at 63000 when the carbs took her down. It has had no gear slippage. Tend to do more distance ridding.
Btw they haven't figured it out yet. My 09 1300 vstar still clunks into 1st from neutral.
Sounds like "THEY" think they know but are wrong to me. Just my thoughts.

The 81 was running fine when the carbs went bad. I was traveling a lot for work and the gas went bad just sitting in the shed. Hadn't had a valve job since the po bought it. I'm sure it could use one.
The 09 has always clunked going into first straight off the show room floor. Only have 4500 on it but no slippage even under full load.
Starting the bike in neutral, warming it up. Then shutting it off, putting in gear and starting using the electric foot with it in 1st you avoid that slamming it into gear (clunk) and wear. Sticky clutches will cause that nasty 1st gear clunk.
I could be wrong ? I don't think so. Some have less than others, depending on clutch and adjustment.

That procedure will work out of the driveway but not at red lights or stop signs so why bother, IMHO ride it til it breaks then fix it right.
This is just for cold starting, once warmed up mine just snicks into gear nice as can be.
Hi Don,
I hope I didn't sound too harsh in the previous post I apologize if I did.
Many swear by 20/50w earl and I've used only that in my first few changes on my G and even in the hotter months I still had to warm it up so the shift into first wouldn't be so harsh. I switched to 10/40w and noticed smoother shifting all around so not to start a dreaded earl hijack, just sayin' that's what works well in my G.

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.
Not a problem here !
Just wanted to put my way out there to avoid that cold starting clunk. Never did like that sound. Once warmed no clunk, this is after freeing the clutch by starting it in gear. (JMHO)

I've never seen anyone that teaches riding that doesn't tell people NOT to do that. Yes, with it in gear, a clutch cable could break, but you're supposed to be holding the brake. You're supposed to keep it in gear so you're ready to launch forward to help prevent rear collisions.
But sitting there holding in the clutch at long lights can suck..

You're right Todd, on all your comments, but I was referring to shutting the bike off, shifting into first and restarting which wouldn't be too safe at intersections.

Sorry. I just know a lot of people that shift to neutral at stop signs/lights. Thought you were talking about them.
