  • Dremmel fix questions

    Hey guys,
I am currently riding without a first gear. It slips so bad that it is completely useless. I printed out TopCatGr58's Dremmel fix guide, but am confused as to how merely undercutting the slots will fix the issue. It seems to me that another spacer/washer is needed in order to close whatever gap has been created through use. Any help would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows what other bikes would have the washer that I need, if I do need one?

The washer is added to 2nd gear, an additional washer will not work with first gear, it has been tried, even one half the thickness and it results in unwanted interference. First gear gets destroyed from jamming into first from neutral when the bike is not moving.

It's not that the distances are off, it's that the edges of the lands of the gears have been rounded, so any pressure against the gear and it forces them apart. Beveling, to where it is sort of pulling the gears together vs pushing apart is the plan. Then avoid what Phil described. Sometimes, if a 1st gear is wiped out that bad, it may not be a bad idea to find another decent one before teardown in case that one is beyond fixing.

'Use' doesn't create a gap. The engaging dogs get rounded a bit at their end and cause them to not hold in their slot. Without a sharp edge on their ends, they'll never hold.

              Hey Kristo, Done,

Just because 1st wasn't skipping "YET", doesn't mean it didn't have any wear!

My 1st gear went out first, started babying it and shifting into 2nd sooner, and sure enough a month later 2nd started skipping as well! 1st gets a lot of wear because of slamming into gear from neutral to 1st when stopped!

So....would still highly suggest performing the undercutting on it and it's mating 4th gear( Done...send him that one also ) while you have it apart, you don't want to possibly have to go back into it in a year or so because you didn't tweak the dogs/slots while you were there!

Depends on how badly it was flogged by the PO.

It's really not difficult to fix, just time consuming. I've had to fix almost every 11 I've had anything to do with. I keep an extra set of already ground/washer swapped gears on the shelf just for that purpose.

                    Hey Hatter,

This is a known weakness for these machines, as well as the early Vmax/Venture engines/trans as well since the gears were square cut, Yamaha eventually got smart and started undercutting them to help them stay together. I estimated that mine went out around 50K miles, I didn't habitually flog it, but I did ride it spiritedly on the take offs on occasion. The lower gears see more activity and so more friction/wear shifting in and out of gears. The condition shows up when under strong throttle action, the stress can cause the gears to slide apart and then back together again so you experience a skipping type feel, so you may not be able to determine if your bike has it until you can get it running well enough to do a good test run.

My 80 G has 82,000 mi. on it. I have always used the 20/50 Castrol or Valvoline in it and it does not have these gear problems. Just lucky or does the oil give it some kind of protection? This situation with the gears makes me nervous as I have no place to tear it down and do the gear fix. Any ideas?

Mine was at 63000 when the carbs took her down. It has had no gear slippage. Tend to do more distance ridding.

Btw they haven't figured it out yet. My 09 1300 vstar still clunks into 1st from neutral.
