I had forgotten that the LH had linked brakes, that MC kit I posted before probably won't work. I wonder if the MC is the same as an XJ with linked brakes. JC Whitney shows a kit for an XJ.

Len at XJ4ever.com is my source for many XJ parts. Here is a link to the rebuild kit for the rear MC of the XJ1100. Its kind of spendy

      http://xj4ever.com/catalog/j-5-rear.html

I have not rebuilt my rear MC. The rear MC is surprisingly clean and works. The front MC was caked with dried yellow gook. I totally rebuilt the front MC and all three calipers and replaced brake shoes. My front calipers were seized. I bought all new SS brake lines from XJ4ever. I have only installed the front brake line. The front brake lever grips like a monster now. The rear is mushy but you can see the rubber line moving when you press the foot pedal. All of the rubber brake lines are OEM from 1981.

When I have the fuel tank off for valve clearances, the buried brake lines will be replaced.

They ate pretty easy to get to. The rear mc is not to bad you just have to move the inner plastic fender off its tabs.
My bike is all original lines and maybe fluid. Was reading the shop manual and it says replace fluid every 6 months , porpptioning valve every 2 years, and lines every 4. Humm maybe the need to start making the parts for that.

          My MNS

was a full teardown so painting everything was pretty easy. It's all powdercoated. Some of the paint on the front of the motor has some rock chips out of now as it's a rider not a show bike. But for the most part it still looks prettty good. I converted the brake system to the same as an SF. Primarily because I couldn't find a new proportioning valve. They will probably last for years, but with my luck, the one time I really need to work it would fail. So it sits in a box upstairs in my shop.

            Well,

Just checked the Official Yamaha Fiche, here's what they showed:

81 LH: 4W1-25850-51-00 MSTR CYLINDER ASSEMBLY

            82XJ: 10M-25850-50-00 MSTR CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
So...even though the base number is similar, the prefix is different, and we've learned that the parts are not the same. Don't know what the difference is!?

            Good Luck!

I do believe (not totally sure) the difference between 81XS and 82XJ is the diameter of the master cylinder, but I do know for sure it does not fit. The linked system is a great feature once you get used to it. Vehicles run for 50 years with the same proportioning valves, so I would not be worried about these either.

Well the future may call for pulling the motor but for now I think just get it moving again.

Hopefully can save the master. The spindle looks ok. Dust boot isn't the best but still there.

If all else fails there is always the nice parts selectionfound on this site.

                Thanks for the info folks.

Have the rear master apart on the 81 mns. I am looking for the pinhole everyone is saying needs to be cleared. Does anyone know where it is located in this master cylinder?
