  • Stock Glass Fuse Panel For 79XS11Special

Hi All...How many glass fuses are in a stock 79 XS11 Special main fuse panel...??? Mine has only three (3) fuses...There is one fuse...than a blank space that doesn't have any fuse holding clips...Than there is two more fuses...Left of this fuse panel there is a single fuse panel with a fuse in it...

I removed an oil cooler from the bike...went and got a stock setup...than
the rain came and put an end to my day...I am happy to report that I was
able to do a cold compression reading yesterday...All cylinders are acceptable
I hope...? Roughly 155 to 160 PSI in each cylinder...each cylinder held the
reading well and none was more than a 2 to 4 pound difference from each
other...Do you think it will increase when I do a engine compression or will
it decline when done at running temperature...Hopefully, I will be firing this
beast up soon...About how much fuel line should I buy...doing away with that
Octy Vacuum crap...its condition was a mess...all the lines were cracked and
hard...I've read that the front (facing front of bike) port on my petcocks gets
capped off...? I did notice a vacuum line coming out the back of the round
cover on the right (brake side) side of the bike...my guess it goes to the intake manifold or on the carb some where...haven't really look at them for a
place for this line...? Finally , any body got a good trick to free up the front
brake pistons in both calipers...to move the bike...I had to remove them and
zip tied them up out of the way...haven't touch them yet...nor have I checked
the rear...rear brake pedal was off the bike...but free...the bike rolled good once we took the fronts off...both calipers were tight on the rotor...As always...Thanks

Hi...I was just thinking (did you smell something burning) that vacuum line I
referred to in the above post...might of been on the left side...I think I notice it
when I was installing my oil gallery plug/bolt...it was either one...only one side
has a small vacuum line coming out the back of the round cover...its late and a
fair walk down some long steps to go check...and had a long hard day...I think
the distributor on my wife's Honda Civic went out coming back from the bike's salvage yard...it died at a red light...Crap on a stick kind of day...

PS: So you can't edit the first post/thread

There are supposed to be FOUR(4) fuses in the fuse block (main 30a, headlamp10a, turn signal 20a, ignition 10a). The fuse you see all alone and down to the left of the main panel is for accessories. If you have a missing fuse in the main area it is very likely someone bypassed it. The stock fuse holders are complete junk after 35+ years. They may LOOK ok but they are not. If you attempt to change a fuse or even wiggle them a little they will fall to pieces. This must be a very HIGH PRIORITY repair for all these 11's.

In addition to the fuses inside that right panel there should be a single fuse inside the LEFT panel. It will have red wires and the fuse is enclosed within a rubber holder attached to the bracket holding the air box.

Those compression numbers are EXCEPTIONAL. Honestly, almost to the point of being a little too high. The books tell us the stock compression it 142# +/-14#. You are certainly within that range. I suspect you may have a little oil in the cylinders that would help boost compression a little bit. I would also guess these numbers might drop a little bit after you get her running. All of my XS11's(3) have properly adjusted valves and are in running condition. They are all at/about 135 +/-5~10#. Regardless, based on those numbers you're in great shape.

You probably need a little less than 3', most of us run the lines from the left petcock to the right side of the carbs and vice-versa. That takes about 18" per side. Most of the guys around here swear by the TIGON fuel line. Personally, I don't have any. I'll get tanked or slammed for saying this but I use automotive fuel line and have no problems. It's good enough for my Rochesters on my Camaro & Trans Am and has not given me any issue with the XS11's. If you are just trying to get 'er running you could use it for a little bit. At only $1 per foot at autozone it's fine for temporary use.

YES. The front ports must be capped off and don't ever select prime. The only caps you will find are "Air Caps" and won't last too long with fuel setting in them. There are other options for permanently capping these off you can find the info in the technical sections.

There should be a vacuum line coming for the LEFT SIDE of the motor behind the cover. The right side is the alternator. The small vacuum line coming from the LEFT side should attach to the front (cylinder side) of the #2 (from left) Carburetor. Only the #2 carb has this port. There are also ports on ALL the intake manifolds. None of these will be used on your bike if the OCTY is removed. The ports these cover will be used for sync of the carb bank once you get 'er running.

Check these caps as they are also all 35 years old and prone to leaking. You can get a whole little selection of replacement caps similar to these at autozone for about $2. However, the OEM caps are much better and resist the heat of that area better. They are still available from Partzilla/Yamaha for about $2 each. HIGHLY recommended. You can get by with the Autozone ones for a little bit just to get 'er running.

NOTE: when referring to locations on the bike refer to those locations as if you are SITTING ON THE BIKE not off it and looking at it.

      Hope this helps......

        Repair the fuse block

        MadHatter,
As a follow up to my previous post. There are a couple guys (I think) that sell a replacement fuse block set-up for the stock OEM fuse holder. If I am correct the replacement brings the fuse normally located in the LEFT cover over to the new replacement. I believe that T.C. (TopCatGr58) has them available for a very reasonable price.

Personally, I was in too big of a hurry and did my own replacement with AutoZone individual ATM-Mini fuse holders on my bikes. It took a little bit of time and a TON of attention to detail but works well for me. Not everyone will be interested in this type of fix but it works for my 11's.

Replacement of this fuse block is extremely high priority as all kinds of troubles the guys experience are traced back to those crappy old fuses and fuse holders. Save yourself a ton a wasted time troubleshooting (and towing charges) and get this upgraded ASAP!!!!

I am certain there is a thread somewhere telling you exactly how to replace the fuse block with one of the aftermarket blocks.....

        Sincerely,
        KURT

Great Thank you...Your information will be a great help...I forgot to mention...I did put a little mystery oil in each cylinder the first day I got it home...I do this for all older bikes I bring home. Once I get it running...I'll
do another compression once that stuff burns off...I had plans on doing one
          at running temperature anyway...
I will have to look into this fuse box issue and replace it asap...With the
tank and the seat off when I went to look at it...One of the selling points was
the harness was intact...Didn't see any home made tape jobs...inside the gas tank you could eat off it...Plus it had a new set of tires on it...Yea Boy...lol

There are 4 fuses in the original fuse panel....taillights, turn signals, headlight, and ignition.

The one on the bottom left by itself is an auxiliary fuse that isn't used unless you hook up something to it.

The main power fuse is in a rubber receptacle by itself under the left side cover.

I moved them all to a more modern spade type fuse panel mounted in the same spot as the OEM panel mostly for reliability but also for ease of access.

Correct me if I am wrong, wasn't it the 80 model year when they moved the main fuse out of the panel? Prior to that the main fuse was in the panel with the rest.

Then, with the old fuse panel there would have to be 5 fuses in there, right?

I don't recall how it was on my SF.
