Ignition fuse blow outs and main fuse connections to..... nothing?

  • Ignition fuse blow outs and main fuse connections to..... nothing?

    Hey everyone,
    Still tackling electrical issues. My ignition fuse keeps blowing out, no idea why. I opened up a bundle of wires that was taped up and found that all the wires were connected to themselves or nothing at all. 4 of the wires come from the main fuse; 2 black and 2 red. They connect to nothing. The connections that should come from there are hooked up to a relay instead.

    Time to look for another wire loom/harness. Or, you could try and decipher a wiring diagram. The question is, why on earth did the PO do that?

      Hi Kristo,
      Welcome to the forum. Most of the real problems with these XS/XJ bikes are either Carburettor or Electrical in nature. The second gear is weak in the early models but I think fixed by 82.
      May I suggest you ask ALL your electrical questions in your post http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45189

      that way there is continuity and you will certainly gets lots of help sorting it out.
      I have been and continue to struggle with electrical stuff on mine too so you are not alone.
      Previous owners (PO) are blamed when things have been butchered and changed from stock.
      Learn how to post pictures to your thread. As the guru's will ask to see what you are dealing with.
      Plan to return to as close to stock as possible or even the knowledgeable people will be in the dark if not dealing with stock.
      Ensure your battery is in good condition and fully charged or your test results will be meaningless. If in doubt replace it.
      Upgrade your fuse panel to the modern spade type fuses. (cheap and easy)
      Those glass fuses and holders are unreliable.
      Find and CLEAN ALL the ground connections.
      Until you have done the above you are just taking stabs in the dark and chasing your tail.

        To UPGRADE skids. The Yammi engineers didn't have a clue when they built a bike so good that they had to stop building it. We need POs to hack things up so the rest of us will have spare parts on ebay.

              Do you know anyone with the same bike so you can compare wiring ?

                relays are a good thing. If they are used correctly.
                What they do is allow the bike's switches to only handle the relays' small operating current while the relay switches the component's higher current.
                Your bike's starter relay is the best example.
                Mind you, the additional relays your dreaded PO has added does leave you out in left field for troubleshooting.
