  • Valve Shim Size

Hey all, I have a question that I want to ask. I just need to clarify what size the valve shims are. From what I have found, it looks like they are 29mm in diameter. I just want to verify this.

Also, my sister has a 1982 xj750 Seca. We were planning on doing the shims together so we can switch between the two bikes if needed. Are the shims in her bike the same size? I cant seem to find a definative answer to make sure before we tackle the project(s).

We want to do this before our annual week long bike ride and just wanna make sure that we don't have to worry about two different sizes.

    Thanks guys

They are definitely 29mm shims. Not sure what the 750 takes though. I do know the KZ1100 uses the same shims, so when I go looking for them on ebay, I usually search for that instead of the XS/XJ. I do have a few shims if you need them (and you're not too far from me), but I'd have to know what size you needed.

All the XSs used 29mm shim. As did many KZ series Kawies as well as the Yamaha built SHO Ford engines but these shims are no longer cheap and easy to come by...

        Hey, Azoroth -

        Just to clarify ...

The XJ750 Seca does indeed use 29mm valve shims, the same shims as the XS1100 ...

          ^^X2 ^^

XSactly what I did with my XJ 750 when I adjusted the valves on my '80G was swap in between the two.

I also have some extra shims I'd be glad to pass on if you need them. Also, z1 enterprises has 29mm shims for 4.95 ea. I just got 6 from them a week ago.

                Thanks!!

Hey thanks everyone for the replies. My dad got the shim removal tool. This should work on both of the bikes right? I know that there are many discussions about pulling the cam's vs using the tool. But we are thinking that the tool is out best option.

Yes, the Motion Pro tool will work on both the XJ 750 & XS 1100 engines.

Patience is a virtue when adjusting the valves

If you buy the shims from a local dealer, (Any bike shop that has been open quite a few years should have them) be careful. There is a 29.5mm shim that you can't tell the difference between even holding one of each together. The 29.5 just won't quite fit in the shim bucket. Take a pair of calipers with you or have the shop check them before buying and taking them home.
