  • Loud Horns

I finished wire extensions and looming of the flashers and the horns. The horns are freakishly loud. Sounds like a train or an 18 wheeler.

The left horn wires were long enough. The right horn required extensions. I cut off the old fastons which are corroded. I cut back the old wire enough to expose clean copper. I own a pair of professional crimpers so the crimps are solid.

The final touch will be a few black zip ties to keep the loom in place.

Which horns are those? I have Fiamm horns on mine, but they look very different. Did yours require a separate relay for power like the Fiamms do?

It comes with a relay. I did not install the relay. They seem to work without running fat wires from the battery.

Be VERY careful with that! They may look like they work now, but those things draw a LOT of current. The OEM wiring is not meant to carry that kind of load. If you're lucky, you'll end up with a blown fuse. If not, shorted wires and sparks under the fuel tank.

I totally agree. Use the relay provided and be sure to have a fuse either on the fuse block or inline. Both are cheap insurance of a horn that works without a melt down of the bike.

Something will fail. Likely the switch. Use the relay.

As per advice given here, I am routing the wires to add the relay. The new relay will go near the fuse panel.

I will install TopCat's fuse panel and use an extra circuit for the horns.

I measured the current draw of the horns. I used a precision 75A, 1 milliohm shunt and a 6 1/2 digit DMM.

The current draw is 7.7 amps with both horns in parallel. An aux battery was used to supply the juice.

A 15A fuse should be good for the horn circuit. I might get away with a 10A. We shall see.

The horns are ear splittingly loud.

Thanks for the advice and for the tips.

I could already smell the fire. Was going to strongly suggest buying a fire extinguisher if not using the relay.
