When checking the rings, to measure the end gaps, you do that at the top of sleeve about 5/8 inch down, not the bottom right? Also the wavy oil ring's don't really wear out do they, it will always be the associated scrapers?

Measure at both the top and the bottom of the stroke Mac. The cylinder will wear less at the bottom because it is lubricated much better. It'll give you some idea of cylinder taper wear.

Pablo bought me a new manual. I hate to use it cuz its so shiny . My old one is missing pages so i washed my hands and cracked open the new one read the appropriate para's. My question about the little wavy oil ring still remains though.

As long as the oil ring spring (the piece between the 2 thin rings) isn't damaged it should be OK, in theory.

        Don't like reusing rings.

          after

running the pistons through a couple cycles in the U/S cleaner it seems this motor was running very lean for a long time. Top of pistons are degraded. I have some spares I can put in so "new" rings it is. May explain how the valves got bent, I think the PO was playing with the timing. Maybe racing 1/4's with it. Who knows. It's my spare motor so no big deal.

The manual is just decoration for your shop, it doesn't really have any answers
