81 XS 1100 Big end bearings

Hi all, I'm a new member. We've got 2 xs 1100's that we've just started to restore. The 81 model H is the first on the table. We've been able to buy new main bearings from the local dealer & a yellow thrust bearing from ebay Canada to complete the required set. But we aren't able to buy big end bearings, seems like they are all gone ??
Not sure what colour / size we need just yet, got to work it out somehow as the colour on the existing has mostly gone, 2 of the pistons are numbered & 2 aren't, also were not sure if what we found when we opened her up was what ran in it because it appears someone has had it all apart & who knows if she was re assembled back in order. We found some odd things inside that weren't good that suggests things won't be good enough. Having said that the engine & parts are in awesome shape, little to no wear all round.
Does anyone know if they are available anywhere or will we have to find an alternative ?

Hi Greg,
I'll translate : The bearings for the Big end of the connecting rod.
That is the end that goes on the crank shaft.
English as spoken in different parts of the world
Manual calls them "Rod bearing inserts"

Do you have a manual? Page 3-27 of mine outlines how to determine the correct size. Look for member Catatonic Bug on here he has a link to the manual.

Big End Bearings

They usually don't wear out very quickly. Unless the copper is showing they should be good. You can check them with plasti guage. If you have the crank out then check it for run out as well. See if you can find a "hanes" xs11 manual for any year xs and it will tell you and illustrate how to do it. The bottom ends of these motors are all the same.

Hi Will,
Be aware there are differences between those two motors. Research on here. Do not merrily mix and match parts as not all will play together.
Valves Pistons Ignition come to mind. do ask first.

Thanks for the polite replies,
I'll check out the links & we'll get it right.
No runout on the crank, everything is surprisingly perfect, there is copper showing on one of the bearings so they all must go, we are in our infancy here with this engine.
Does anyone know where they can be bought? I've had a couple of looks & nothing. Is there something else used from another bike or whatever ?

That's a trust bearing for the crank John.

As far as I know new rod bearings are no longer available other than the odd set that shows up on ebay now and then.

Big end brearings

Your right Greg, I couldn't find any when I did mine. But I checked my clearances with plasti guage and thankfully even though some copper was showing, they were still in tolerance.

I'm not sure what you have up there for "local" shops, but down here there WERE a few shops that could use the old bearing and re-coat the babbit on it. I'm not sure if the shop in San Jose, CA is still around, but it would be something to check on.
