  • Long day

I don't know how many of you saw my little video of the tear down of this E, but in it you'll see a couple stills of the carbs that came off it. They were the skankiest carbs i've ever seen. Anyway today i thought I'd see if they could be salvaged. After reoving the diaphrams and slides, I split the rack and started to take them apart. The only thing that came out easily was the diaphrams and slides.
3 of 4 pilot tower plug screws were broken off and rusted in place. (drilled them out) 4 of 4 pilot jets had to be drilled out, all 4 idle mixture screws were broken off, 3 of 4 pilot air jets needed to be drilled out. 3 of four starter jets were rusted closed. All the butterfly screws were rusted in place and had to be drilled out to remove the butterflys. All the shaft seals were deteriorated and most of the shafts are bent. The bowls had all rusted completely through in the lowest corner(it was on it's side stand for 15 years)Carb tops I just remove the bolts with vice grips and threw the tops and screws in the garbage.
But, with much patience and endurance, I now have four useable stripped bodies to work on tomorrow ,to see if I can unplug all the passages form rust.
I have enough spare parts to get a good set of working carbs together if I can get the passages clear.

    Carbs

Would be nice if you could have them put in an ultrasonic cleaner.

I have no doubt in your technical ability but how much pain are you in for, I'd say a lot. Me knowing how I am every time I had a problem it would be those carbs. Personally I'd only give them one shot at working, clean them, triple check everything and if there are problems strip the good parts and scrap metal bucket the rest. If there is that much rust inside and things bent it's gona be a pain in the ass to get a smooth idle and I'd bet low speed sync will be off from mid speed. I do wish you luck and empathy.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

        Cleaner

Pitman-I have a 20 gallon "branson" ultrasonic cleaner. They will spend the next few days cycling in and out of that with liberal amounts of compressed air after each cycle. Right now they are soaking in a vat of metal rescue.

Ron- I hate to give up on anything. Patience is everything when doing anything with these bikes. If it doesn't come apart or go together easily then your doing it wrong. With these carbs, there are some tricks I've found over the years that help, but the most important is that as soon as you find that what your trying isn't working, quit right away and try a different technique before you destroy what you have to work with.
I'm sure I'll get the passages clear, what concerns me is , when ever you remove a broken idle mixture screw tip, the metering hole is distorted to some degree. Finding the right adjustment under running conditions will be difficult without a colour tune or a very good ear. The ability to count turns on the screws is gone. The tip of a new screw will have to extend into the throat more than usual so if where 1 1/4 turn was factory settings, these may be 1/4 turn and all will be different.

Mack as I said I have no doubt in your ability or persistence but you are like a few here exceptional in technique and persistence because of experience.

So if I got a bike and did all this and sold it to you what would you call me when you had to retune it.

              No worry's

That's not my style Ron, these carbs will get buried with me. I would never let them out of my shop incase the new owner wasn't up to speed on tuning these carbs. I will however throw them on my SF next summer and see how they perform. If it's good then I'll keep them on it and make my originals available for guys that need them. Win win for everyone!

                    Passages

Passages are all clear and I've got great velocity with the compressed air. Some staining in the barrels from the "metal rescue rust removal, but while the stain is still there after polishing them, the barrels are smooth as a babies bottom. Very happy at this point.

Mack, you definitely have good patience and persistance taking on a set of carbs in that condition! hope they can end up salvagable and tuneable when back together!

                        throttle shafts

I worked on them today. I had a piece of steel that was the right thickness and had to use a hack saw to cut it to width. Arm is pretty sore right now. Anyway I clamped that into a vice and slipped the shafts over that, then double nutted one end and was able to turn the nut and twist the shafts back into place without distorting the butterfly slots. I'll debur them tomorrow and check the fit and alignment. Funny thing with these. I absolutely know these carbs are original to the bike and the needle jets (emulsion tubes) are all 4-4-4-4 on all carbs. The PO never tampered with them. This is the third set I've see with that config of emulsion tubes.
