  • Stator Clearance

Ok, so I've read up on this and want to test to make sure my stator isn't going to rub against the rotor.

I removed the stator cover in the summer, and removed the three bolts holding the stator in place by accident. Of course I find out after I shouldn't have done that. I know the clearances are pretty tight, and that if anything gets misaligned it will short. I put everything back, and it went back together pretty well, but I'm worried I may have a problem now.

Any way to test this? I was thinking just measure the resistance across the coils at different positions to make sure it's not rubbing in any spots before I start the engine up. How does one realign the stator anyway if it needs to be repositioned?

I've been here before: rub your stator with a wax pencil and run the bike. If you see any rubbing, u might want to buy a back-up stator . . .

If you have the stator properly seated in the boss in the cover and the centering pins for the cover are in place you shouldn't have a problem

Yeah the centering pins are fine. Thanks for the help! Hope to be starting the bike back up soon

Make sure those 3 bolts for the field coil you took out are properly tightened, it's a fried mess if that comes loose. Rockin'D's did.

I bet! Maybe some locktite for good measure

I didn't post earlier cause I thought someone else with more experience would suggest it? The field coil fits inside the ROTOR. I was thinking to help alignment that a person could wrap a few layers of thick paper/construction paper around the field coil, then put it ON/IN the rotor. THEN put the ALT cover into place, then put the 3 mounting screws in, and evenly hand tighten first, and then wrench tighten using locktite. THEN remove the alt housing and the field coil will come with it sliding out of the rotor. Remove the extra paper and you should then have some decent spacing of the field coil WITHIN the space of the rotor in the ALT cover!? JAT! And no risk of spinning moving parts to damage the field coil before being able to verify that it's well centered in a non-contact position!

Unless the rotor is bent or improperly installed, or the cover itself is bent there shouldn't be any issues.

The stator and field coil fit into machined bosses and if fully seated in them and the centering pins are in place can't be moved anyway.

The front right corner of my case has a cracked-off missing piece, which happens to have one of the locator dowel pins for the stator. When I pulled the stator cover, it took things out of whack. So, missing a dowel pin will definitely have an effect on misalignment. Down$hift has an extra field coil I swapped him for.

I like this idea TC! I'm sure it's fine since the dowels are still intact, but I'm anal about this stuff. Always best to get it right the first time, rather than having to buy a new stator.
