  • Exhausting problem

Those of you that were following my "Power Loss" thread http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44707 know that I finally figured out the problem I was having was caused by the very restrictive baffles in my Mac 4 into 2 system.

I was planning on using a system off of an XJ but the head pipes are rusted through just ahead of where the muffles attach. I had another system off of a 79 F I was going to try and use with some HD mufflers but both of the collectors are cracked and one has already been welded once.

I was going to adapt these HD muffs to the Mac headers I have on the bike but the headers have a 2 1/4" outlet and the HD muffs are 1 3/4". I have discovered after a lot of searching that 2 1/4 to 1 3/4 reducers don't seem to exist.

All the replacement motorcycle mufflers I find are either 1 1/2 or 1 3/4.

    Any ideas?

Just so I've got this straight - you want an adapter that has a 2.25" ID and a 1.75" OD - correct?
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I see why you're having trouble finding them. I did find motorcycle mufflers with 2.25" ID inlets... but they are not cheap. Cone Engineering

Yeah, I've looked at Cone. Nice, but by the time I paid shipping and tax I would be paying about $400 for mufflers.

You previously worked across the street. Grt your backsied over there for a couple shorty pipes expanded on one end. For Christ sake, they have enough lead content they WILL take an ezxtensive swelling on one end.

Didn't leave on a good note there and it really pisses them off I've been working across the street in plain sight so I can wave and smile at the jerks that caused it all the time.

Kinda like mooning them for the last 4 years if ya know what I mean.

I do have a couple friends over there though.

The new aluminized pipe isn't as elastic as you might think Brant.

True Greg, but they DO have a higher lead content for more flexability and stretch. More so than 'over the counter' pipes.

                    Hey Greg,

Well, that's great that you figured out what was wrong. Granted, I'm no genius, but I reviewed that thread, and saw that I had commented about clogged exhausts on page 11 of the 17 pages of the thread.

As for the slip ons...take the adapter that will fit the muffler, and have a muffler shop stretch the other end large enough to fit the headers. OR, just use 2 adapters....the 1.75 to 2.00 and then a 2.00 to 2.25. JAT!?

I have a set of Mac taper tip muffs on the way. I'll see how those work.

I took those turnouts and hacked the baffles with an acetylene torch and made it so I can see light all the way through them. Haven't stuck them back on to see but I'm pretty sure they will be REALLY loud now.

These shorty home made muffs are Harley obnoxious. The bike runs REALLY good with them though.

I've got to get into the clutch. It slips a little now with all the power back, even with the Barnetts. I have a new set of frictions and steels from one of the parts bikes and a new set of Barnetts I need to get in there.

Sounds like you've got bout as much ambition as I do...........well, actually more than I do, since the Venturer now is the only scoot left for me to ride. Still to sore and don't quite trust trust my balancing as of yet.

Yeah Brant, the way I look at it I have 4 or 5 months before I'll really need to get it done.

I was lacking ambition to work on my bike when I was laying around with busted ribs too. Not only did it hurt but I was out of breath and worn out after about 15 minutes. Pain killers didn't help ambition any either.

Pushed myself as hard as I could without going overboard and got Okie fixed back up by the time I healed though. Even rode to work a few times in December and January. The bumps were a little painful at times though.

Totally understand. Figure by time I heal enough and do one more float drop(.015) and back on with them to dial in the fuel mixture and sync, should be healed enough to throttle it fairly well. Just gotta time it all correctly so I not tempted early to throw a leg over the seat.. Two to three more weeks oughta' get me close to normal anyways, sos I can drop the carbies off and back on.

They should be there the 8th hope they do well. Like I said you will have no problem adjusting them. And its just good you and Brent are still here and no matter how you hit it takes time to recover. Had to lay mine down on asphalt about 15 years ago and have not forgotten how that felt. I did not break ribs and rode the bike home but hurt for weeks and I am sure my spleen is some where else now but I am still here.
Brent just get well I know you want the bike back together and be rolling down the road but give yourself time
