  • bogs once in a while

Carbs were cleaned and inspected over this past winter by a novice bike mechanic. Has brand new plugs (whatever the XS1100 recommended NGK's are). Recently there have been a couple times when the bike feels like a slight bog. Almost like when you're running out of gas. Seems to happen at lower rpms with partial throttle. I'll hear a little pop, like a misfire and will be a little sluggish. I'll get to my destination, hang out for a bit and then all of a sudden she's running great again. These are not long rides and temps are about 75-80 here in NJ.

Been using 89 octane (because some swear by 87 and others by 92/93 so I'm splitting the difference )

New inline fuel filter was installed over winter.

    Any ideas?

    Where should I start troubleshooting?

a 'novice mechanic was my first clue. Actuallt the idle mixture is set too rich.........if it was re-set at all.

Yea, I mentioned novice because I'm finding a few things he did were shotty. However I can't talk because he's more capable than I. Not saying much.

You seem pretty sure of your answer. I'll try and find a way to adjust myself. Would that explain the intermittent bogging? Wouldn't it always bog?

Oh hell,...there's 4 of them buried in the carb? I'm sure it's not as easy as reaching in there and turning each one a few ticks. Then I gotta re-sync right??

Who's great idea was 4 freaking carbs???

Maybe blocked gas cap vent. When it bogs, you could try opening the cap, make sure tank is not topped off. Or, just clean it.

It could be an intermittent pick up coil wire issue too. Mine did that when one started to break. Sometimes it would make contact and work for miles then 2 cylinders would cut in and out at random times.
