  • Possibble ignition or starter issue

I have been riding my bike and enjoying the weather every day for the last two weeks (about 30-40 miles a day)
After i came home from work today, I parked it and went back out a few hours later

I started the bike and it ran for about 20 seconds then shut off, now I have no power to the bike it will not start (with the starter button) and the brake light will not light up when i squeeze the brake (like it used to)

I'm attempting to charge the battery to make sure its not just dead but would the ignition switch going out cause this or is it the starter button or the starter itself
the lack of brake lights makes me think its either battery or the ignition switch ,. any thoughts ?

Check the main fuse, which is on left side in a rubber booted looking housing under left side-cover.

Sounds like possibly the main power fuse or a bad battery connection.

I'm assuming your bike is an 80 Standard by your signature. On an 80 Special the main fuse is located under the LEFT side cover in a rubber receptacle, not certain if the Standard is the same.

Neither of the first two symptoms you mention are an issue.

The main is under the other cover on the other side I think. All by itself in a black rubber receptacle. You need to release the lock at the bottom of the cover with the tip of your ignition key in the lock.

OK. That main fuse should be right there to the top LEFT of the battery in it's receptacle hanging on a tab of the frame. 2 red wires running into either end of it.

I see the Tab in the pic but the fuse isn't there, Look for the holder with the red wires.

                              Greg!!!

I found it it was a loose connection there ,.. however the P.O. has rewired the main into the other sides Fuse box (added a fuse ) and there was a loose connection at that point
