Do I need to be model specific when ordering brake lines?

    Yes...

I ordered the set for a 1980 XS1100LG from these guys...

    http://www.technafitstore.com/category-s/39903.htm

Lots of colors...good fit...the rear line is just one, so you'll not need the steel-rubber arrangement.

One thing though, the front grommets are not included, so you can use your old ones (they are a bit large for the new lines) or someone here stated that the correct fit can be ordered from Mike's XS...

I used the old ones...there are a bit large for the new, smaller lines...

    I hope this helps!

I got a set from Techna Fit a couple weeks ago, and yes you need to be model specific. The upper front brake hose will be a different length for a standard vs a special. I ordered a set for my '79F, and it came with all the grommets installed on the lines. The front upper was a little too short for stock bars, but I e-mailed them about it, and they sent me a longer line at their expense. I also had to grind a little width off the front keepers to fit the new grommets, which were a little narrower than the stockers. If you have any questions about the lengths needed it never hurts to call them first.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I also ordered Techna-fits ( 79F). I had absolutely no problems with anything- they were plug-n-play.
