36 year old clutch cable finally bit the dust

When Bob jones said the clutch cables will last for ever, he may have exaggerated a little.

36 years you really cannot ask for more than that. I did keep it lubed up. Lubed the cable recently and did not notice any fraying. The knuckle at the end of the cable that goes in the lever came off the cable. Good thing I had a spare in the garage. Wifey was nice enough to bring it to me and didn't rag about my old bike and XS11 junk yard of a garage.

I am telling you as a man with experience if you got a new cable and did not get a known good XS1100 old parts spare you had better get a separate spare to carry. I got a brand new replacement and put it on 2 months before a rally and found myself and a team helping me put a spare TopCat had on at lunch time first day of the rally. Those new modern made are not the quality you just replaced. Not wishing evil upon you I am just telling you the facts.

That makes me feel better; since I used the one I took off an SG. I'll have to lube it up. I also remembered I had another one I picked up off Ebay and it looks like its in excellent shape. It too was off an SG.

I replaced the clutch cable on Betsy with a brand new Motion Pro cable just before I put her to bed for four years. That brand new cable hadn't stretched yet, and talk about a long pull! After sitting for four years the cable stretched a bit, and it's very acceptable now. There's definitely something to be said for a used cable.
