Yamabond 4

Can Yamabond 4 be used sparingly on rubber gaskets ? Valve cover gasket on the Honda ST1100.

Is an old (opened) tube still useable if the tube is still pliable?

Here's a description I found for it!

Yamabond 4 Motorsports is a silicone based liquid gasket that fills gaps on a flange surface and prevents leaks. When cured, this product forms a rubber-like body that resists heat and seals joints subjected to high temperature. Gear and engine oil resistant, Yamabond 4 Motorsports sets in 60 minutes. Not for use on copper or copper-based alloys.

So...I would think as long as the rubber gasket is cleaned of oil so that the Yamabond will adhere to it, and the valve cover, should be just fine!

Yamabond, Hondabond, and Threebond 1104/1194 all seem to be the same stuff. Probably Permatex Ultra gray too?
or,
maybe use Permatex Ultra Black.

How old is the Yamabond?

If it's really old it might be the original flavor that used lead, Pb. It'd be a shame to waste that on a rubber gasket, you can't get it any more.

Yummy! That looks like Colonel Yamaha's original recipe.

The lead in the goop helped make a soft, flexible metallic seal for metal parts -- like aluminum engine case halves -- that can move slightly relative to each other under normal use and run at temperatures that used to destroy conventional sealers.

Lead is bad for children and other living things so of course the lead had to be removed from engine case sealer because a child might chew on your engine; fording streams and running in the surf could contaminate a fish or poison one of the endangered species of engine-case-sealer-eating birds.

Use the goop however you like but don't rub your eyes and don't bite your fingernails. If you want to be 100% safe you should not even think about opening that tube (send it to me! ) but when you're done with it, make sure you bring the empty lead roll to the local hazmat site for proper disposal instead of tossing it in the trash.

The new Yamabond tube directions include the statement that it should be used within one year. 7 year old tube might need to be replaced. I would be more comfortable with a new tube.

on the subject, I have a tube of permatex ultra blue that I normally use for the swingarm/final drive connection but I want to try it on the carb boot/intake connection. Good idea or bad?

I have a tube of Yamabond that is well over a year old (not sure how much though). I think it might be a selling ploy to keep stock moving because the stuff is still like when I opened the tube. Pliable and rich. So I would not hesitate to use it.

Hey Mack,

This statement was in the PDF datasheet by Permatex:

Note: Not recommended for parts in contact with gasoline.

Granted, the intake boots are only exposed to gas VAPORS, and not necessarily liquid gasoline...UNLESS you have a carb float valve leak!

Yes I was looking for an expiry date and saw the disclaimer on the blue, switched to "Ultra Grey". I was in the shop and sent that by my phone but it must be suspended in the ionishere someplace.

I have used Yamabond 4 for 35 years on gaskets. Works great.
