  • XS Tool Box - What ya got in there?

    XS Folks,
Today on a trip with the Bride I stopped for gas and noticed the cap on my #4 carb sync port was cracked. It's brand new so it didn't make any sense. Anyway, I tried not to look at it too much on the way home but realized I was 30 miles from an auto parts store and didn't have ANYTHING in my tool box. The split cap stayed put and I got home safely and replaced the cap.

I did a search and found all kinds of threads for guys "traveling" and one funny link Marty provided to a guy that packed some weed in his kit. I'm not worried about rain coats, or packing MRE's. I mean the little tool box under the seat what can I get in there to help with a SMALL issue on a day trip?

    Here's what I now have:

Here it is all spread out on the garage floor.

There isn't much extra space in there and I don't know if the flashlight is even needed but it fit. I'm thinking of adding a little length of #12 wire.

    What am I missing?
Remember it's got to fit or I have to toss out something else. Thoughts?

    Respectfully,
    Kurt

I can do any repair with the stock tools supplied in the original tool box. The thing is, if parts are needed, then what do you do.

      Well Kurt,

I would remove the razor...I always carry a pocket knife! Same thing with the flashlight, I keep one in my jacket pocket if expecting to ride into the night.

I noticed the FUEL LINE...I hope you don't have THAT type on your bike...that's automotive doublewalled stuff...it's crap! You need to get some good quality single walled type, either TIGON, or other silicone rubber type from a bike shop or similar place.

I was thinking J-B Weld...but that stuff takes a few HOURS to cure/set! They make a JB Quick that forms much quicker, but I don't think it's as hard/strong...but for an emergency repair it might be enough?

Spark spark plug, spare electrical wire...fuses, you already have the electrical tape.

Also noticed the battery ground and screw. Due to it's proclivity to corrode, I would suggest taking it apart, cleaning, then applying copper infused grease/antiseize on the threads, wire contact, frame contact and reassemble to help prevent further corrosion and loss of ground/charging ability.

        Don't forget the morphine!

Seriously, if your kit contains the stuff in the OEM kit, you're good. I often carry a 12v test light.

The XS is pretty tough, but is known to have a few issues. Carry a new 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th gear wheel in case you blow 2nd. It's too hard to find power for a Dremel on the road, or you could pack an inverter. Tools for pickup coil wire replacement along with wire, splices, and heat shrink. If you ride like Tod, a spare hub is in order and if you flog it like John, or Mike Farrington, perhaps a spare engine is in order.

Do you think that covers it, Rasputin?

OEM Kit? Who has one of those?

          TC,
Actually..... YES....That's my fuel line....I'm a car guy.... All I really know well. I tried some clear single wall but it could not seal properly. I'll check with the guy at Yamaha and see what he has. I'm not sure he's my friend anymore after all the $2 shims I took him for...

I like the suggestions for Fuses and Wire. I'll toss the flashlight. I hadn't even remembered the fuses.

I thought about a plug (or two) but I can't fit anything in my boxes to pull & install it. Maybe I can find one of those OEM tool kit plug wrenches? As I recall, years ago Yamaha had like a screwdriver that fit inside the plug wrench and a 17mm that doubled as a plug turner. I have a couple old bike wrenches but nothing small to pull a 13/16" plug.

Plugs will take up a bit of space. Maybe I get the plug wrench and only some emory cloth to clean the fouled one....

              Ouch!

I guess its well earned but I like to ride long distances and the extreme duty can pinpoint problems, sometimes with emphasis.

I think your basic Yamaha kit is close though I'd add a quality Leatherman for the knife, file and needlenose pliers. A small amount of electrical tape wrapped around your pressure guage shaft, spare set of fuses, and wrap the plier handles in duct tape. An AMA card in your wallet gets you a tow truck and I keep a flashlight and 14mm seat wrench in my vest pocket with spare keys.

I pulled the photo from an old thread. It isn't mine. Best bet is to check with Andreas or watch eBay. I'll post an inventory on here one of these days. It's probably easiest to just build one. There are two listed on eBay now.

I saw those on EBay. Neither had the dip stick.

The dipstick is super easy to make, I have a 1/8" piece of wooden dowel that I marked with permanent marker. Get creative!

You could always check out CruzTools for a full kit. I was eyeing one, but I have the OEM kit so there's no need.

                            Tool Kit

I'm gonna ditch the flash light and buy one of the thin wall plug wrenches on Evil-Bay. They range from <$7 (located in Hong Kong) to $20++ I think I can fit that in there with the fuses and a little spool of wire.

I really like the idea of wrapping some duct tape around one of the tools. I know a guy that had a broken gas cap and drove home with his cap taped shut.

If/When we take a REAL ride we'll have the soft bags and will certainly take a few more emergency tools.

My real thought was those little quick/impromptu short trips like I did this weekend (45 miles away) and I didn't even have a screwdriver! That was a really rookie mistake!

After I noticed the cracked port rubber I was thinking.... I wonder what the ole' lady has in that purse if this vacuum plug flies away? Maybe she's got a Band-Aid I can tape around this? Not a good feeling....

                            KURT

FYI.... I've had a 10-in-1, electrical tape and couple wrenches in my XJ550 (also has no factory kit). But it does have a good bit more room in that little glove box at the back of the seat than this XS11 has available

I have deliberately used the stock tool kit at one point or another in the garage to do all the stuff I would be able or need to do along side the road. It isn't the best for ease of use, but works.
