  • Is a 80 and 79 Ignition Box the same??

Is a 79 Special Ignition Box the same as a 80 SG? It looks different inside.

    Thanks.

They're functionally the same. There are some internal differences as Yamaha made changes to the design over the course of production but hook-up and operation is the same. The '81 ignition is a one-year-only as is the '82. The '78-80 boxes all interchange.

Thanks. My wife (engineering tech) cleaned up the PCB and it looks a lot better. I put it back on. It still looses a cylinder or two. It looks like it is a pickup coil. I did not think it was this because someone already replaced the wires. With the engine running I barley touched the wires and the engine died.
It looks like the connection have come loose.

I wife said she would replace the wires if I remove the coil. Do you really have to drill the screws out and replace them with special bolts and have a special tool like the manual says. I would also like to clean up the advance.

      Thanks everyone.

        Hey, Bill,

Yes, you have to drill out the special bolts but they are no longer available from Yamaha so you can legally replace them with regular bolts and it will pass any kind of inspection.

If you're going to repair the pick-up coil wires but they're too short, find a piece of almost any kind of wire and splice it inside the harness down by the Neutral switch. That way you only have one repair splice in the O.E.M. pick-up coil wires and the double splice is safely tucked away in the harness right next to the exhaust pipe. .

        .

While you have the harness open, put a small piece of that self-amalgamating tape on all of the splices.

That'll help keep any water that gets into the sheath from shorting the pick-ups to the Neutral Switch wire or to each other and killing the engine when you wash the bike or ride through a puddle.

My wife fixed my running problems. The pickup coil wires have been repaired a couple of time. There were a few breaks in the wires. My wife replaced both wires (with silicone test leads) and now it runs great. I also bought a new maint. free battery off of Amazon.

Now after I take it for a few rides I need to work on the rest of my list.

                  Thanks for everyone's help.

                    Bill,

Will you be bringing your wife to XS Southeast? We should have 20 to 30 XS1100's there. We could keep her very busy. She'll have a lot of new friends!
