I am going to have to enjoy the bike the way it is, I am a little strapped for cash. Over the winter I will look into replacing the shocks (Shadow 1100, VTX1300 or Progressive) and replacing the front springs (maybe some emulators to and a fork brace)

XJ1100 air shocks work really well.

No compression damping? That's not accurate. Maybe poor compression damping characteristics or no compression damping adjustment, but they all have it.

I have almost 5 years on the Shadow 1100 rears shocks on the 80SG and they are great, pretty available on eBay. No comp or rebound adjustment but suit the weight of the XS very well. They are great solo, loaded up for Rally's, or with the wife for occasional rides in the evenings. Kind of bad-*ss look with the full chrome tube covering the spring too.

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

The spring provides the only compression resistance on many shocks, take one of the springs off of an XS11 stocker and you can see for yourself, there is no compression damping, at least none that would make any difference in slowing the shock down compressing.
