So, I put some new skins on: Shinko 712's what a difference over those old Dunlop 404's, literally night and day. Now I can push it harder in the corners but I noticed that it bottoms out, there is a scrapping sound, especially in right hand leaners. My rear suspension is set at the second firmest setting and it pogos when I am pushing it (zero rebound dampening). Can these shocks be rebuilt? I am looking for a cost effective solution. Thanks

Hey 1887,
The OEM shocks can't be rebuilt...and they NEVER had rebound dampening anyways!SO....you'll want to look into getting some other shocks..... many here recommend the XJ shocks which ARE rebuildable, and are air assisted as well. I do not know if they have rebound dampening though?? But almost all modern shocks will have both compression and expansion dampening. Folks have had decent experience with even just the cheap ones you can get from Partsnmore.com or Mikesxs.net vs. putting $400 into some bigger brands.

All shocks have rebound dampening (except possible mine, haha).

Are you sure they are stock length shocks? Some PO may have swapped them out for shorter ones so he could look cool.Greg

The stock shocks are actually 12 5/8" (yeah, it's only 1/8"... LOL) and weren't that good when new. But these bikes didn't handle all that well when new if you pushed them hard....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

The shocks look 100% stock to me. Maybe the spring has weakened over time or these bikes just bottom out easily? Can I replace this with any 12.5" shock? Maybe I can track down some used Progressive 412's or 430's.

"id be extremely careful going around corners too fast with the shaft drive. the rear wheel will kick out on you" What do you mean kick out?
I don't plan on blazin the twisties with this old girl (its not just the back the sucks, the front end feels like twist ties), but I'd like to be able to ride at a spirited pace.

1887,
I don't know about the shaft drive having anything to do with it but the centerstand foot lever doesn't fold up like the footpegs.
When it hits the ground in a left-hand turn it can't 'give' at all so it acts as a fulcrum. If the bike continues to lean, the rear wheel lifts up and the back end instantly slips to the right, "Boop! There it is!"
The only way I can think of for the shaft drive to make the rear wheel slip in a turn is if you were decelerating into a corner, then suddenly accelerated. The sudden "kick" from taking up the lash in the drive train can break the rear tire loose if you do it j-u-u-u-ust wrong but a chain drive can do the same thing.

Smooth application of throttle is pretty much go fast 101, maybe a bit more so on a big ole shaftie. And I can deal with hitting the hard parts, center stand, exhaust pegs etc. I was just worried about rear wheel kicking out statement.
Its a fun bike to ride it reminds me of the '72 Buick I had with Dunlop Gold Seal bias tires.
