  • rear bearing woes

    Today I took off the rear wheel which came off remarkably easy, then things got ugly. I followed the wheel bearing tech tip and the manual and after I pounded out the bearings and cleaned up the wheel I went online to try and find the right bearings. In the tech tip, the total price came to around $40. As I'm pricing it out the price has run amok the right side bearing is going for around $40 just by itself and the needle bearing is discontinued. I damaged the right side so thats going to has to be replaced. I rescued the right side from a can of part cleaners and while it's not terribly damaged or worn out I did nick the black inner sleeve. So i'm thinking it'll probably need to be replaced but maybe not I don't really want to risk it but at the same time this project has run way over budget every time I turn around I need a new tool, part, etc.

    So my question is what is the cheapest solution to replace both front and wheel bearings and where should I get them?

    my seal still look pretty good so I'm thinking I could reuse them unless thats a big no no.

    I usually have the dealer put new ones in with every tire I buy. I take the tires off the bike and carry rim and tire into the dealer. I get backs and front tires mounted with new bearings and seals for 100ish

        So it take it "FAG" 5904 is a suitable replacement? Who's a good supplier? kboehringer didn't mention a name.

            For the front, ANY local bearing supply has them, and under $20 for the pair.

                Yes they do. Just the left rear is the spendy one if you can even find one. GL

                  I didn't check the links, but Chinese bearings like All Balls, are cheap. Koyo is OEM and now mostly USA made. They aren't so cheap.

                      would this bearing be an acceptable replacement for the rear left bearing the size looks right.

                        You and Kurt need to get your parts guys on the horn and do a conference call.

                        No, that NKIB is still in the 5904 family but it's an angular contact bearing. It's got needle and ball bearings and it's not the one you want. You want an NA 5904 like the one in T.C.'s picture that he just posted a few minutes ago in another thread, not a NKIB or NKIA 5904:-

                              Well done, Sir!

                              Kurt, I'd be surprised if the entire '5904 bearing line was discontinued, it's not a proprietary Yamaha part.

                              The part that got discontinued was apparently Yamaha's version without the lubrication groove and feed hole to the needles from the outer race. I'm surprised it not normally offered for sale as a base version without the groove and the feed hole but it probably saved Yamaha a few Yen because the rear wheel hub isn't set up, drilled and tapped for a grease fitting anyway.
