  • Photo & Measurement Needed - L Side Cover

    XS Folks,
My left side cover hook for the lock is broken off. The PO apparently made a replacement and riveted it to the side cover. It also broke off. I removed the rivet and painted the side cover. The cover is actually in very nice shape otherwise.

I believe I could easily fabricate a replacement and rivet it on the cover as he did. Unfortunately, I can't find a pic of exactly what it is supposed to look like or how long it extends from the side cover.

I searched this forum and Evil-Bay also. The couple of the covers offered on Evil-Bay appear to have broken off tabs as well. Their pics are crappy of this area as well.

I'd like to fix this cover as the used ones in good shape command a pretty high price.

If someone can post a nice pic of an unbroken clip and give me a dimension or two I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

You don't need to fabricate one. Yahman did it for you!

      Kurt,

If you can't reach Larry (Yahman) by PM, you can try sending an email to:

      larryfoster(at)q.com

FWIW, if mine was broken, this would be my one and only choice for a repair ... a very nice, quality piece.

        Marty,
Thanks for the link. Can't figure why my searches of the XS forum did not show that thread? I sent Larry a PM.

        Thanks again,
        Kurt

          Kurt,

You and I posted at the same time, but mine came up first ...

You might get a quicker response if you email him:

            Hello Everyone,

I am reviving this old thread in hopes that somebody can provide the OP's requested information - detailed photos/drawing/measurements - of an intact left side cover post. I too have a decent battery side cover, with a broken locking tab. I also believe that if I had measurements or a rough outline of this Post's shape and profile, I could fabricate one. (Evidently the member who once offered a replacement post service is unreachable.)

I have cleaned up the locking mechanism and it works just fine, so all that's left is making a post...

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

            Rocky

Here are some photo's I just took today. The all black cover is from my '79 Special that I ride. Measurements on the one photo should help to get the correct shape. I would use JB weld for building up the latch, as you can fine tune it easily, but it will last.

I have built up plastic side cover damage with super glue and baking soda. Google it. Clean with alcohol, Couple drops of glue and a dusting of baking soda. Repeat till desired mound is formed then file to shape. Easy and strong repair. Good luck.

Thanks so much Guys!! I'll post what I come up with. I think I will fabricate the post/latch out of some sheet plastic, or maybe some T-Bar aluminum.

I've attached a couple of photos of what I'm starting with...

                  Sure appreciate your help!!
